Today is Flag Day, the Birth of Our Star Spangled Banner

Message from CT State Representative Dan Carter:

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Today is Flag Day, a day to not only honor the birth of our Star Spangled Banner but to also honor the birth of the United States Army.

The American continental army was adopted by Congress upon the recommendation of the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775. This was a huge step towards the American Revolution and the freedom of our nation. This year, the U.S. Army celebrates its 240th birthday.

Also on June 14, the United States adopted a national flag designed by Francis Hopkinson in 1777. His flag had thirteen stripes that alternated red and white, with thirteen six-pointed stars arranged in rows. Today we celebrate the adoption of this patriotic symbol through a tradition of displaying our flag on homes and government buildings.

Finally, in part to commemorate these events, it is tradition on June 14 to recognize “Pause for the Pledge Day.” Beginning in the 1980s, United States citizens have taken a moment, starting at 7:00 p.m., to pledge allegiance to our flag.

I hope you recognize this day as one to remember the sacrifices made by the U.S. Army, and to honor our flag by either saying the Pledge or simply taking a second to appreciate it.

Thank you.
