Bethel American Legion Flag Retirement Ceremony was Held on June 14
On June 14, 2015, four members of the Bethel American Legion held a “simple” flag retirement ceremony to properly dispose of 100 flags no longer in proper condition to use. The United States Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
Commander Charlie Weeks, Jace McKenney, Chaplain George Gaylord, all Bethel residents, and Jim Ryan, from Danbury, conducted the ceremony.

“We have come together to dispose of a U.S. flag which is no longer serviceable. The flag has served as a reminder of our nation an those who have defended and died for our freedom. It has served us well,” said Commander Weeks as the ceremony began.
The Pledge of Allegiance is recited, with a hand salute by all.
A moment of silence is observed as the flag is retired.
The color guard brought the flag forward, unfolded it, and placed the flag into the fire. (If the flag has special significance or history, it would be mentioned.)

Commander Weeks thanked everyone for attending.
Many American Legion posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14, Flag Day, each year. This ceremony creates a particularly dignified and solemn occasion for the disposal of unserviceable flags.
According to the Legion website “A set of rules of civilian flag courtesy popularly known as the Flag Code was first formulated by the National Flag Conference meeting in Washington, June 14-15, 1923. The Flag Code was an attempt by prominent patriotic organizations to collect together in one instrument statutes, executive orders, and rules of established custom and usage relating to the U.S. flag. On Dec. 22, 1942, the 77th Congress approved Public Law 829, giving official sanction to most of the provisions of the Flag Code. This public law established the Flag Code in Title 36, U.S. Code, Chapter 10, Sections 173-178, including the Flag Code § 176(k) on disposal of unserviceable flags.”
“The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual since that date.”
“The purpose of The American Legion in adopting this ceremony was to encourage proper respect for the Flag of the United States and to provide for disposal of unserviceable flags in a dignified manner. Resolution No. 373, approved by the National Convention of The American Legion meeting in Chicago, Illinois, September 18-20, 1944, re-emphasized the purpose of proper public Flag disposal ceremonies and encouraged greater use of this ceremony by The American Legion.”
