Senate Talks Fail, Federal Government Shuts Down

WASHINGTON — The midnight deadline came and a the federal government began a partial shutdown Saturday after a vote did not receive the support needed to pass the Senate.

The failed proposal would have funded the government until Feb. 16, extended the low-income children’s health insurance program, or CHIP, for six years and suspended some Obamacare taxes for two years.

Senate Democrats were concerned about young immigrants covered by the DACA program, and did not support the bill after the discussions with Republicans and the White House failed.

Republicans did not gather a majority for the vote as some in their own ranks opposed the short term solution, frustrated with the large number of similar spending bills over a month.

Exactly one year ago was the inauguration of President Donald Trump, and he blamed Democrats for the government shutdown. He tweeted, “This is the one year anniversary of my presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present #democratshutdown.”

A statement was released just before midnight by The White House, and stated “Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown.”

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands. This is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators,”

Vice President Mike Pence,  who was on a diplomatic trip in Cairo, said, “It is disappointing to every American that the Democrats would shut down the government at a time when we have troops in harm’s way.”

Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. in order to power through mess!
