Rep. Harding: Tax Impacts on Connecticut Car Registrations
One of the many symptoms we face from Connecticut residents being over-taxed is violations in vehicle registrations.
Taxes in general have been a burden on our State residents for far too many years now. I will continue to do everything I can to ease this heavy burden on our residents through proposed legislation and amendments to last year’s devastating tax hike.
In the meantime though, I encourage all residents to follow the law regarding their car registration. Registering your vehicle in a state where you are not truly a resident effects our economy and the burden upon the remainder of our taxpayers.
Though registering out-of-state may save you money in these tough economic times, it can also cause your town to struggle finding the funds to provide you and your neighbors with necessary municipal services, and your other taxes will likely increase to make up for it.
Furthermore, there is considerable action being taken all over the state to track down these registrants and collect what is owed. As of now, the DMV is not involved, but their participation may mean more sharing of information from states where Connecticut cars are registered.
Please remember, drivers who receive a summons for illegally registering their vehicles out-of-state could face a fine of up to $1,000.
I promise to continue to work with our municipal leaders throughout the district in resolving this matter in a practical and effective manner.
