Bethel High School Class of 2015 Graduation at WCSU, June 18
The Bethel High School 2015 Commencement Ceremony took place on June 18, 2015 at the O’Neill Center of the Western Connecticut State University, at 6:00 p.m.
Bethel High School (BHS) Principal Christopher Troetti gave the Welcome Address. He said he was inspired by the words of actor Bradley Whitford, and his message to students was, “Take action. Every story you’ve ever connected with, every leader you’ve ever admired, every little thing that you’ve ever accomplished, is the result of taking action. You have a choice. You can either be a passive victim of circumstance or you can be the active hero of your own life. Action is the antidote to apathy and cynicism and despair.”
Troetti continued, “You have distinguished yourself as the class of firsts…Academically you have earned the highest combined grade point average in almost a decade at Bethel High School.” Troetti mentioned many student accomplishments, and said, “These accomplishments represent that you, the class of 2015, have taken action.”
Troetti said, “So now what. Regardless of where you are going or what you plan to do with the next phase of your life will most likely prove to be very different from what you have experienced for the past 17 or 18 years. Although you have exciting times ahead, you will also be faced with the need to make many decisions about the future. Like Mr. Whitford said, refuse to be passive victims of circumstance. Be active heroes of your lives, embracing opportunities. On behalf of the entire Bethel High School community, I wish each and every one of you, and I mean each and every one of you, the greatest success. Congratulations.”
First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker also gave a Statement from the Town of Bethel to the Class of 2015. Knickerbocker said he had served on the Board of education when the students were entering kindergarten and spent 15 years attending the many activities students performed throughout the years. “In all ways I can tell you, you have made me proud to say I am from the town of Bethel, CT and I want to thank you for exemplifying the tradition of excellence that we have in our school district,” Knickerbocker said. He continued, “Now tonight is your own personal launching pad, the best is yet to come…You are well prepared for and of the challenges that you may face in the future…..You make our town proud.”
The program was as follows:
The ceremony began with the Processional to Pomp and Circumstance, music by Sir Edward Elgar, performed by the Bethel High School Concert Band, who also played the National Anthem. The class president Caitlyn Peterson lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The Bethel High School Chamber Singers performed “For Good” from Wicked, arranged by Mac Huff.
Chairman Lawrence Craybas gave a message from the Board of Education.
The introduction of the National Honor Society members was read by BHS Assistant Principal Gary Lawlor.
