LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM DONALD BORSCH JR.:
Open Letter to Amanda Neville, the woman who saw me on 6 Jan 2016 with my open-carried Jericho:
Amanda, I am the guy with the gun you saw that Wednesday morning, shopping with his 5-year old daughter, at Caraluzzi’s in Bethel, CT.
I’d like to simply tell you why I open carry a firearm, (or conceal carry, as applicable), as I do, in the hopes that you might read and understand at least one person’s take on being a legal and Constitutional firearms owner in CT. I do not speak for the whole of all gun owners in CT, no. This is me speaking to you.
I vividly remember where I was on Friday morning, 14 December 2012. I was actually enroute to my father’s house in Virginia with my family. As we were driving, my wife’s phone rang and she took the call from a co-worker of hers about a shooting in Newtown. I switched the radio to find a news station, and sure enough, I found a report about it. My wife and I were horrified, as you were, I imagine. Once we reached my father’s house, he had the TV on CNN, and we all sat silently watching the report unfold in front of us.
Myriad thoughts raced through my mind about the safety of my children. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the heartache those parents were experiencing. My God, my God….such loss. Such tragedy. Such horror. And the feelings of helplessness they must be going through…
Before that day, I had little thought as to purchasing a firearm for myself and for the safety of my house. I mean, I live in Bethel. It’s not exactly a hotbed of crime, not is it a battlefield. But then I thought about Newtown. Newtown is a place I had been to hundreds of times. Small, quiet, safe. Yet now it was crying over loss. It was burying their children murdered by a madman. I decided right then that I would get my CT permit and purchase a firearm, or two, and never be put into a situation wherein I would lose my children due to the machinations of any madman.
I have years behind me as an Infantry Grunt in the US Army, so guns are not alien to me. I was also raised in Michigan as a hunter. Guns were everywhere. I learned to shoot at a young age, (obtaining my Hunter’s Safety certification), and also learned the maintenance of guns and their required protocols of safety. In the Army, as I said, I was a Grunt, and guns were part of the life. Now I was a civilian. A husband. A father. I knew what I needed to do.
I pursued the steps required to obtain a CT permit, and paid all applicable fees associated with it. After spending over $320 and waiting 4 months, I received my green light to make the trip to Middletown and get my official CT Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers in July 2013. These required steps included local, State, and Federal background criminal checks. With my military background, and a verifiable DD214 to prove it, I had thought it would be a simpler process, but alas, it was mildly complicated. However, I was patient, and that patience paid off.
Now I have a CT permit. I open carry or conceal carry my legal, registered, and wholly Constitutional firearms where I venture, save for establishments/businesses that prohibit my entry due to said firearms. Places like schools, the post office, government buildings, etc. Yes, there are national chains that prohibit my right to carry a firearm, but quite honestly, I simply do not frequent such establishments, as they are merely targets for madmen like Adam Lanza.
When you saw me that Wednesday morning, I was grocery shopping with my 5-year old daughter. She is incredibly important to me, and her well-being is paramount. As her father, I am both prepared to kill and die for her. What parent would not do likewise for their children? I open carried that particular day because it was too warm for a winter jacket. I wore a hooded sweatshirt, instead, and had my Jericho on my right hip in a very comfortable mid-ride holster. This particular holster is also equipped with a snap enclosure to prevent it from falling out. I prefer an open carry method so I can draw the firearm faster if needed. Remember, my first priority is to protect my daughter from another Adam Lanza.
The argument goes that, “Who needs a gun when they grocery shop? This isn’t the Wild West. You’re just paranoid and you’re making others uncomfortable. Why are you trying to make a political point? Your rights end where my comfort begins.”
To all of that I simply say, “I am breaking no CT laws. My guns are wholly legal. I have a legitimate CT Permit to carry. I understand you have consulted with the Newtown Action Alliance to push legislation that would force me, as a gun owner, to produce my permit whenever a police officer feels they can ask me to do so. This is not an issue for me, as I am pro-police, and am more than happy to accommodate them if they ask. I actually have my CT Permit in an ID card holder, which I attach to my shirt/jacket, so anyone can plainly see I am legally armed in CT, and that I am one of the good guys with a gun.
I am sorry you fear my gun. It is an inanimate object made from steel and plastic. It does nothing in and of it’s own accord. It lacks sentience and will. My CT Permit lets you know that I am a person who has passed a stringent battery of background checks, and have shown myself to be completely safe. Safe enough that CT would trust me with a permit to carry a gun.
If only you would believe this, and realize that I, and many, many like me, are not a threat or a danger to you.
