Report by Paula Antolini, April 12, 2020, 10:02PM EDT
A letter was posted to Bethel residents by First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker on April 11, 2020, announcing the first death in Bethel from the Coronavirus. His letter read as follows:
“Dear Friends and Neighbors,
“It is with great sadness that I have to share with you that today Bethel suffered its first fatality due to COVID-19. The victim was a woman between the ages of 70-79. On behalf of our community I offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family.
“I also have to share that the number of confirmed cases reported in Bethel jumped from 90 to 103 in the past 24 hours. Although the governor announced in this mornings’ press conference that the rate of new infections seems to be slowing, this does not mean we can relax the procedures we are all following to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. The virus is in our community, and it is more important than ever that we follow every single piece of advice to keep from being infected and spreading the virus.

“I share these numbers not to cause alarm or anxiety, just simply to underscore the critical importance of being disciplined and vigilant.
