Expect Construction Work on I-84 in Danbury and S.R. 816 Bridge in Newtown

Work is expected to continue over the next few months on I-84 in Danbury and S.R. 816 bridge on Glen Road, over the Housatonic River in Newtown.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I would like to notify you of two roadwork projects taking place in our district. One has commenced between exits 5 and 6 on I-84 in Danbury, and the other on the S.R. 816 bridge on Glen Road, over the Housatonic River in Newtown.

Work on both projects is expected to continue over the next few months. Please see the official Department of Transportation releases below for more information and lane closure schedules.

Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in these vicinities.

Reconstruction of Interchanges 5 and 6 on Interstate 84 in the Town of Danbury to Begin

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of work for the reconstruction of Interchanges 5 and 6 of Interstate 84.

The project consists of the widening of the Exit 5 off-ramps (eastbound and westbound) and the Exit 6 on-ramp and off-ramp.  Route 37 (North Street and Padanaram Road) will be widened in the area of Exit 6 and traffic signals will be upgraded and/or added at intersections from Balmforth Avenue to the North Street Shopping Center.  Also, a new storm drainage system will be installed on Second Avenue.

DOT Project No. 0034-0313 was awarded to C.J. Fucci Construction, Inc. at a cost of $14,984,185.97 on 1/29/15 and is scheduled to be completed 8/31/17.

LANE CLOSURE INFO

Expect delays Monday through Friday as follows:

  • Exit 5 Eastbound Off-Ramp – 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Exit 6 Westbound Off-Ramp – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Exit 5 Westbound Off-Ramp and Exit 6 Eastbound On-Ramp – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Padanaram Road (Route 37) – 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

All other roadways – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

On Saturdays and Sundays, work will be limited to 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. on all project roadways.

From April to November 2015 and 2016, existing travel lanes on Interstate 84 Eastbound, in the vicinity of Interchanges 5 and 6, will be shifted and reduced to 11-foot widths, to accommodate the widening of bridges.

Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00507 on S.R. 816 over the Housatonic River in the Towns of Newtown and Southbury

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that work will be starting for the rehabilitation of Bridge Number 00507 on S.R. 816, Glen Road, over the Housatonic River in the towns of Newtown and Southbury.

The project consists of the rehabilitation of the full length of the structure including replacement of the concrete deck, structural steel repairs to the truss and floor beams and a complete repainting of the bridge.

DOT Project No. 0096-0193 was awarded to McNamee Construction Corp., at a cost of $4,474,000.00 on 10/21/14 and is scheduled to be completed in June 2016.

LANE CLOSURE INFO

The contractor will be allowed to impact traffic between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

When temporary signalization is installed at a later date, an alternating one-way traffic pattern will be instituted. A press release will be issued prior to implementing the alternating one-way traffic condition.

The contractor will be allowed to close S.R. 816 (Glen Road) and detour traffic for a duration of seven (7) calendar days.  The dates of the detour will be provided thirty (30) days in advance of closure.
