BPS Supt. Dr. Carver Message Regarding Extended School Closure, Summer Programs and Renovation Projects

Report by Paula Antolini, April 10,2020, 7:47PM EDT

Letter from Dr. Christine Carver, Superintendent of Bethel Public Schools, April 10, 2020:

I hope your family is safe and healthy.  Over the past few days I have been able to participate in morning meetings with students from Berry and Rockwell School.  It has been wonderful to see the children. My staff and I miss them tremendously.

A few updates since publishing my newsletter yesterday.  First, as you are probably aware, the Governor extended the school closure to May 20th.  He did indicate in the press conference and on a subsequent conference call, that it could and likely would be extended.  In addition, he spoke about setting up a plan to reestablish normal functions, which include lifting restrictions in a manner which does not promote reinfection.  This factor could contribute whether or not we can resume normal school functions before the end of the school year.

I received an email yesterday inquiring about whether or not we would be able to provide our Summer’s Best Program.  After I had responded, the issue of summer programming came up on the Governor’s conference call. For the same reasons noted above, the public health officials indicated that it could be problematic to run these types of programs due to the number of people in a given space, potentially causing reinfection.  Therefore, although a final decision has not been made, we want to make you aware that we may not be able to run any of the non- mandated programs this summer.  Special education programs are mandated.  We will keep you informed as to any final decisions.

The only “positive” aspect of this school closure has been the impact on the renovation projects.   At Johnson our construction team is continuing to do the roof replacement (planned over the summer). The teachers parking lot has been completely removed and will be configured and paved.  There is a lot of work being done in the new gym. It is being enclosed and the new “platform” is being built. They have taken down the scaffolding (in the back of the school) and are completing the drainage work.  They have taken over (demolition and some limited abatement) the kitchens, cafeteria, and stage area. The second floor of Johnson is being demolished and the new elevator is now installed. The new addition, specifically the media center, is also in the finishing stages.  Lastly, they are doing site work and removing the cement overhang in the front of the school. Johnson School continues to be significantly under budget, with a healthy contingency (owners, environmental, and construction).

At Rockwell, our construction team is continuing to do the roof replacement (planned over the summer). They have completed demolition and abated the kitchen and gym.  We have also given them access to work on the remainder of the cafeteria, including the stage. The second floor is pretty much completed, there are just a few “punch list” items.  They are beginning to work on the first grade spaces. Rizzo is also replacing all of the windows in the main office and will be removing the original front door vestibule shortly. Lastly, they continue to work on landscaping, particularly in the back bus loop.  The Rockwell budget also has not changed. The combination of the two projects is still under budget, with contingencies in place.

I know this is a challenging time.  Given the constant bombardment of information  about the pandemic from the media and its impact on social emotional well-being, I have asked my staff not to include the pandemic as part of any lessons.  If there is anything we can do to support you and your family, please do not hesitate to contact your building administration or myself at [email protected].
