Report by Paula Antolini, June 19, 2020, 10:11AM EDT
A letter was issued by Dr. Carver, Bethel Public School Superintendent, and Mr. Christopher Troetti, Bethel High School Principal, on June 19, 2020, regarding last night’s black out of the BHS BETV Bethel Graduation 2020 video:
“Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students, and Community Members,
“On behalf of the Bethel Board of Education and the staff of the Bethel Public Schools, we would like to express our anger, frustration, and sadness in telling you why the graduation live stream was taken down last evening. As you probably know, at the beginning of the ceremony an individual from the public typed incredibly offensive racial slurs in the chat feature of the livestream. We made the decision to take it down immediately because we
did not want to give that individual a platform for hate. We have contacted the Bethel Police Department to assist us in trying to identify the individual responsible for this hate crime.

“Graduates and your families, do not let this incident tarnish what was a wonderful event. We are extremely proud of you and your accomplishments. We will have a video of the entire event for you and your families in the coming days.
“It is ironic that we have to send this communication on Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. This hate incident reemphasizes the work that we must do to end racism in our country, state, and community. We will update you on the progress of our investigation.
