Bethel Public Schools Science Teacher Placed on Leave, Department of Children and Families Investigating Incident

On October 25, 2018, Bethel Schools Superintendent Dr. Christine Carver sent a notice to parents mentioning that Ms. Salerno had sent them an email that their child’s science teacher, Ms. Kathleen Quader, was placed on leave.

Carver told parents that “the Department of Children and Families is currently investigating the report of an incident concerning Ms. Quader.”

“Although the reported incident occurred outside of her classroom and did not involve any of her current students, as part of their protocols, DCF is required to interview a sample of students within her class to determine if they have any insight in the matter,” Carver said in the letter. “DCF is in that phase of the investigation.”

Carver further informed parents that an investigator from DCF may be contacting parents to obtain permission to speak to their child. “If your child is selected and you give permission, a school official (likely Dr. Brooks our Assistant Superintendent) will be present when the worker is speaking to your child.”

No further information is given at this time. Carver said, “At this point, due to the ongoing investigation by DCF and as it is a personnel matter, we cannot disclose any specifics regarding this matter. Please note however, we put children’s safety as our top priority and are following all district and state protocols.”

If there are any questions parents are asked to contact Ms. Salerno or Ms. Brooks.

We will update this story as more information is received.

We attempted to contact Dr. Carver directly for a comment but we have not heard back yet.
