Bethel Public Schools recently announced that Mr. Derek Muharem, Principal of Bethel Middle School, has accepted a position as Middle School Principal of Long River Middle School in his home community. The school is located at 38 Columbia Avenue in Prospect, Ct.

Bethel Middle School Principal Derek Muharem is Leaving Position
Bethel Public Schools (BPS) recently announced that Mr. Derek Muharem, Principal of Bethel Middle School (BMS), has accepted a position as Middle School Principal of Long River Middle School in his home community. The school is located at 38 Columbia Avenue in Prospect, Ct.
Mr. Muharem has been an educator at Bethel Public Schools for 19 years, starting as a Physical Education Teacher, an Assistant Principal then Principal of BMS.
BPS wrote, “Bethel Public Schools is known across the state as being a progressive school district and many of the achievements at the middle school are directly linked to his leadership. While we understand his personal decision to be closer to his family, he will be missed!”

The previous principal of Long River Middle School, Principal Jayne Lanphear, 61, a Watertown resident, retired after spending her entire 37-year teaching career at Long River. She started as a teacher before being hired as assistant principal in 2008 and principal in 2009.
The Region 16 Board of Education, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, approved Lanphear’s retirement the last week of October 2015, when she wrote them a letter.
Long River Assistant Principal Michelle Meyers filled in as acting principal in the interim and Karen Aliciene, a teacher at Long River who has an administration certificate, is the interim assistant principal.
Lanphear was planning on retiring at the end of this school year, but chose to retire early due to family reasons. Lanphear decided to help with the transition and work two days a week through the rest of the school year, after she retires. Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin indicated she will be paid on a per diem basis, based on her current salary of $132,000.
