Wolfe County, KY — First responders in Wolfe County worked through extreme heat on Saturday to rescue a group of hikers and their dog after the trio suffered from heat exhaustion on a rugged trail.
Hikers Lost and Struggling in the Heat
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on August 16, the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team (WCSART) received a 911 call reporting that two hikers and their dog had missed the turnoff to Rock Bridge Trail, ending up fatigued on Swift Camp Creek Trail.
“A team found the hikers along the creek, and members fashioned an ‘improvised carry-out’ to get the dog to safety,” reported Fox56 News.
High Temperatures Prompt Safety Warning
WCSART shared on social media the importance of hydration and caution during high heat:
“If you start to feel the effects of the heat, stop your hike, hydrate, rest and cool down before continuing. Heat and dehydration not only affects humans, but our K9 friends as well.”
- Hikers are advised to plan for sufficient water and take breaks in shaded areas.
- Dogs accompanying hikers should also be monitored closely for signs of heat stress.
Community Praises First Responders
Local animal rights advocates expressed gratitude for the team’s swift response in saving both humans and their canine companion. WCSART staff noted that some team members also volunteer at local animal shelters, highlighting their dedication to both people and animals in the community.
