Wisconsin Woman Sentenced to 10 Years for Deadly Drunk Driving Crash which Exposed Victim's Brain after Violent Crash

RACINE COUNTY, Wis.Kristi Lichtenwalner, 38, was sentenced on Monday to 10 years in prison for a 2022 rollover crash that killed a 37-year-old Kenosha man, according to court documents and her criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime.

Crash Details

The fatal crash occurred when Lichtenwalner, allegedly drunk with a blood alcohol level of 0.245, lost control of a red Cadillac SUV. Police report that her passenger was ejected approximately 30 feet from the vehicle into a ditch, suffering catastrophic head injuries described as “split open, exposing his brain.”

Investigators found an opened bottle of Old Smoky Tennessee Whiskey near the driver’s seat, linked to Lichtenwalner. Deputies observed the injured man in a grass ditch along Durand Avenue, while Lichtenwalner and another woman were found near the SUV, with Lichtenwalner in distress, crying and screaming.

Evidence Confirming Lichtenwalner as the Driver

Despite initially denying she was driving, evidence confirmed Lichtenwalner was behind the wheel:

  • Airbag control module data and DNA testing on a blood stain in the airbag matched Lichtenwalner.
  • A strand of hair embedded in the shattered driver-side window supported the investigation.
  • Witnesses confirmed she and the victim switched seats before leaving Lichtenwalner’s home in Union Grove, with Lichtenwalner driving.
  • Surveillance footage from local businesses showed her driving en route to the crash site.

Authorities noted her slurred speech, alcohol odor, and abrasions consistent with airbag impact, corroborating that she had been the driver.

Victim and Legal Outcome

The victim, a 37-year-old Kenosha man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lichtenwalner pleaded guilty in August to homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, according to Law&Crime.

She is now serving a 10-year prison sentence, highlighting the severe consequences of drunk driving.

Safety Tips to Prevent Drunk Driving Tragedies

Authorities emphasize these precautions to reduce the risk of alcohol-related crashes:

  • Never drink and drive: Always use a designated driver or rideshare service.
  • Plan ahead: Know your route and arrange transportation before consuming alcohol.
  • Report impaired drivers: If you see someone driving under the influence, contact local authorities immediately.
  • Educate friends and family: Encourage responsible drinking habits to prevent tragic outcomes.
