Scott, Wisco. – A 26-year-old woman from Soldiers Grove was killed early Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 61 in the Town of Scott, Wisconsin, authorities said. Icy road conditions are believed to have played a significant role in the deadly collision.
Details of the Crash
The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, when deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene near Bear Cave Lane on U.S. Highway 61.
Authorities said a 34-year-old Sparta man was driving an SUV southbound with passenger Kristen Howell, 26, when he lost control on a curve, causing the vehicle to cross the center line and collide head-on with a northbound box truck.
“Kristen Howell was ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene,” deputies confirmed.
The SUV came to rest on the highway following the collision, leaving Howell fatally injured.
Involvement of a Second Vehicle
A second SUV, driven by a 26-year-old woman from Shullsburg, was traveling southbound behind the first SUV. Authorities said she struck the disabled vehicle while navigating the same curve, but she was not injured in the crash.
The box truck driver suffered minor injuries, and the driver of the first SUV, the Sparta man, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Highway Closure and Investigation
U.S. Highway 61 was closed for approximately five hours while deputies conducted crash reconstruction. Investigators continue to review the circumstances, with preliminary findings pointing to icy roads as a significant factor in the chain-reaction crash.
Safety and Awareness
Officials urge drivers to exercise caution on icy roads, particularly when navigating curves or steep terrain. Using reduced speeds, maintaining safe distances, and being vigilant can help prevent similar accidents during winter weather conditions.
The three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 61 tragically claimed the life of Kristen Howell, while seriously injuring the SUV driver. Authorities continue their investigation into the incident, emphasizing the hazards of icy roadways during early-morning travel.
