Wisconsin Construction Workers Rescued After Nearly 100 Trusses Collapse

Portage, WI — Two construction workers were rescued after being pinned high in their lifts when nearly 100 roof trusses collapsed during an installation project in central Wisconsin, according to local fire officials.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, at the Columbia County Highway Shop on Highway 16, where crews were working to install structural trusses for a new building.

Truss Collapse Traps Workers Midair

Authorities from the Portage Fire Department said they were called to the scene after the structure partially collapsed during installation. Reports indicated that approximately 90 out of 100 trusses came down, creating a dangerous situation that left two workers stranded.

“It had been reported that two construction workers were pinned and trapped in separate lifts after 90 of the roughly 100 trusses that were being installed had collapsed,” the department stated.

According to WFRV Local 5 News, both workers were 25 to 35 feet in the air when the collapse occurred.

Rope Rescue Efforts

Emergency crews quickly assessed the site and set up a rope system to safely reach the workers. The two men were carefully lowered from their lifts and evaluated for potential injuries once on the ground.

“The workers were in two different lifts, roughly 25 to 35 feet in the air, uninjured but needed help getting out,” fire officials said.

Firefighters and emergency responders coordinated with construction site personnel to ensure no additional workers were missing or injured in the collapse.

No Serious Injuries Reported

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and both workers were found to be in stable condition. Fire officials credited the quick and coordinated response for preventing what could have been a far more serious outcome.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, and officials have not yet confirmed whether structural or mechanical issues were involved.

Safety and Structural Concerns

Incidents like this highlight the critical importance of safety protocols during construction projects, especially when working at heights or with large structural components. OSHA and local authorities are expected to review the site’s safety procedures following the collapse.

Construction experts note that truss collapses can happen suddenly if not properly braced during installation, underscoring the need for strict adherence to safety standards and continuous site inspections.

“It takes only one small shift in balance or support for a structure to give way,” one local construction safety official said. “Luckily, in this case, everyone walked away.”

A Fortunate Ending

Despite the dramatic collapse, the outcome was a relief for first responders and co-workers at the scene. The Portage Fire Department praised the teamwork and calm response of everyone involved.

Both workers were evaluated at the scene and later released without any reported injuries.
