Will the I-84 Greater Danbury Road Improvement Project Benefit Bethel?

Report by Paula Antolini, August 1, 2021, 9:27AM EDT

Have you seen the new I-84 Danbury Project concepts? The I-84 Danbury Project is a Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) initiative to reduce congestion and improve the mobility of people and goods in the I-84 corridor in greater Danbury.

Concepts 1, 6, and 7 are now on the project’s website. You can now see what the state has planned for the Danbury area. The project team is evaluating all possibilities for improvements in the I-84 Danbury corridor. The chart below includes all concepts that are being developed for the I-84 corridor between Interchanges 1 and 8. As concepts are developed, they will be added them to the project page.

CONCEPTS

Concept 1 seeks to create lane continuity, eliminate left-hand exit ramps, and, where possible, improve horizontal curvature and vertical geometry. This concept endeavors to maintain the current alignment of I-84 and stay within the existing right-of-way to the greatest extent possible. The primary component of this concept is the addition of travel lanes to eastbound and westbound I-84 to provide at least three lanes of travel in each direction. Improvements are only proposed at Interchanges 3 and 7 on I-84. No improvements are proposed at the remaining interchanges on I-84.

Concept 6 seeks to improve vehicular travel conditions in the vicinity of Interchanges 3 and 4.

Concept 7 seeks to straighten the I-84 alignment in the vicinity of the Interchanges 2 and 4. For this reason, a tunnel and open-cut sections are considered on I-84 on the west side of the project corridor.
