Warning: Black Bear Sighting Near Bethel CT; Info. from Weston’s Animal Control Officer Mark Harper
The warning issued to residents by Mark Harper is as follows:
“In the north, south, east and west of Weston people have reported seeing black bear. The town is keeping track of all bear activity. It has been reported that the bear is more scared of you and your pets and runs into the woods when it senses you are near. But, as a precaution, stay in your house or car. If you are outside, get inside. Do not run, just back up slowly. If the bear approaches you, yell and scream at the bear and continue to retreat. Wave your arms over your head to make yourself look bigger. If you feel threatened or if the bear is attempting to gain access to your home or car, call 911. Otherwise if you just have a bear sighting, please call animal control at 203-222-2642 or call the Communications Center at 203-222-2600. We will be posting updates as we obtain more information and data. If you want to take photos please make sure you are in a safe location and email them to: bigbear10@optonline.net.”
In Bethel call the Animal Control Officer at 203-778-7424.
If it is an emergency call 911.

Author note: A member of my family spotted a black bear yesterday, crossing the road on Route 58 one block south of the Bethel border near Putnam Park.
