Williamsburg, VA — A Virginia sheriff’s sergeant is being praised online after rescuing a deer trapped between the bars of a metal fence — only for the animal to hilariously run back through the same spot moments later.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said on social media that Sgt. Sam Demarest responded to a call about a deer in distress earlier this week and arrived to find the animal wedged tightly between metal bars.
A Rescue Turned Comedy
Using quick thinking, Sgt. Demarest carefully worked to separate the bars of the fence just enough for the deer to pull itself free. The sheriff’s office shared the story and photos of the encounter, describing it as one of the lighter moments in the department’s day-to-day duties.
According to UPI, once the deer was free, it appeared to take a moment to look back at its rescuer — almost as if to say thank you.
“After a quick moment of gratitude (and maybe a little confusion), the deer looked right at Sgt. Demarest,” the department’s post read.
“He tried giving the deer a few helpful directions — but instead, the deer promptly turned around and went right back through the fence again.”
A Lighthearted Ending
The sergeant could only laugh as the deer retraced its steps and once again squeezed through the same opening. Fortunately, it didn’t get stuck the second time.
“Sgt. Demarest could only laugh and cheer the deer on,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Sometimes, you just have to let nature do its thing.”
After successfully navigating the fence, the deer ran off unharmed back into the wild.
Community Reaction
The story quickly spread across social media, with residents praising Sgt. Demarest’s compassion — and sense of humor — in the situation. Many commenters called the moment a “feel-good story” that offered a welcome break from everyday news.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office added that while not every call officers respond to ends on such a lighthearted note, this one reminded everyone of the unpredictable nature of working in public service.
