On October 10, 2016, at 9:00 a.m., Columbus Day was celebrated in Bethel, CT. It is a national holiday that officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.
Isabella of Castile, Queen Isabella I, also known as Isabella the Catholic, is also famous as the queen who financed Christopher Columbus’s voyages to the New World. She was the queen of Castile after 1474 and of Aragon after her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon in 1479.
Monday’s fall weather was quite chilly and a bit windy, but beautiful nonetheless, for the small parade that traveled down Greenwood Avenue from South Street and proceeded to P.T. Barnum Square, to a waiting crowd of about 30 individuals. A Bethel Police car lead the way, then the highlight, Christopher Columbus’ “ship” (a motorboat in tow) that “sailed” along the streets of Bethel with Michael Mastroianni dressed as Christopher Columbus and Gina Clarizio as Queen Isabella. Bethel resident Billy Michael, in his top hat, strumming his guitar, was also aboard, and added to the festive atmosphere, along with a flutist. The Bethel Volunteer Fire Department antique fire truck and ambulance completed the parade.

The Bethel Columbus Day Parade began 35 years ago, initiated by Gina Clarizio and the late First Selectman Ed Mills, and his wife Geraldine, to honor the Italian heritage.
The parade onlookers included several of this year’s local election candidates: CT State Senator Toni Boucher (R) and CT State Senator Michael McLachlan (R) (both for another term), Bethel resident Will Duff (R) for CT State Representative) and Bethel Registrar Tim Beeble (R) (another term as Registrar).
Bethel First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker, Selectman Paul Szatkowski and Selectman Richard Straiton were also present, and Knickerbocker gave a short speech.
Knickerbocker said, in part, “Today we celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurism and exploration that Columbus brought to the new world … There’s a lot of talk about global economy today, globalism, for better or for worse, trade happens, the entrepreneurial spirit that brings global trade, and really when you think about it … he was the first person to open up global trade around the world because he opened up trade routes that never existed before and people followed him … he’s also responsible for a tremendous amount of biodiversity, because with that trade, people started bringing plants to other parts of the world and it became part of the cuisine in those areas. So he actually had more of an impact than you would even think. Not only on economics, not only in exploration and science, but even on the biodiversity of our entire planet. And of course today, here in the Town of Bethel, all you have to do is look at all the names on all the businesses, the Italian Americans have brought tremendous success to this country and fought for this country. They brought craftsman, woodworkers, tailors, entrepreneurs, business owners of all kinds, attributed to our educational system, they made us what we are today. So today we recognize the contributions that Columbus began so many centuries ago.” View the video of the full speech below.
Billy Michael introductions and First Selectman Knickerbocker full speech:
Gina Clarizio spoke next, and said, to the surprise of many, that she is retiring along with Billy Michael, from doing more Columbus Day parades. This could mean that this is likely the last Columbus Day parade in Bethel unless others step up to carry on the tradition.
Clarizio said, “One thing that bothers me still, and I still want to leave this maybe as an impact to everyone, and we need to continue to, I don’t want to say fight, but at least insist on continuing this celebration of Columbus or recognition of great Columbus because he really was great, because we wouldn’t be here today, to protest, vote, to do anything, if it wasn’t for him. So I think it still really important that we recognize Mr. Columbus.”
“It seems a day doesn’t go by that there’s a group of one or another that tries to tear down Christopher Columbus,” Clarizio said. “The latest effort comes from a White House petition that seeks to take Columbus Day and change it to Explorer’s Day. The petition fell short. The lack of enthusiasm among Americans to make the change is not a surprise. His legacy is his name found almost everywhere. Colleges, broadcasting companies, spacecraft, are named after Columbus, even the nation’s capitol bears the name of the famous genovese. ‘Columbia’ was a word made up to mean ‘Land of Columbus.’ It’s purpose was to ridicule the American colonies. What began as a mark of shame evolved into a mark of pride.”
“History was on his side, for the politicians, be them kings, queens, emperors, or presidents, will come and go. As for the great writers, the artists, the inventors and explorers, they and their achievements live on forever,” Clarizio said.

“The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus is not only observed in the states of the United States but also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and Latin America, and in some cities in Italy and Spain.
“Though today some controversy may surround this holiday, we acknowledge both the bad with the good.
“A great scholar William Connell professed that ‘what really mattered was his landing on San Salvador, which was a momentous, world-changing occasion such as has rarely happened in human history.’
“This holiday has very special meaning to Italian Americans and to the Town of Bethel. It is a time of pride, pride of our heritage and of the accomplishments and contributions that famous Italian Americans made to this country, and pride in what our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles sacrificed to give us personally everyday. Millions of us immigrating from Italy, giving up all that we knew to cross a great ocean with fear and hope in our hearts that there would be a better life and better future here in America, yet living the Italian way with a focus on food, family, friends work, school, church and enjoying depend meaningful experiences everyday.
