There are many kinds of “finish lines” in life, and Michael Kacer has certainly crossed many of them with bravery, stamina and a positive outlook. He continues to inspire us all. This is a story about a genuine war hero that makes our nation proud.

FINISH LINE: Michael Kacer. War Veteran, Star Athlete and Inspirational Portrait of a Hero.
I was so impressed by Michael Kacer that had to bring his story to Bethel Advocate readers. Kacer hails from Pennsylvania but lived in Yonkers, New York, and is currently in the process of moving to North Carolina with his girlfriend, Jess Schuman of Ridgefield, CT. He kindly agreed to visit Bethel, CT, to tell us his story. Thank you Michael, and thank you to the Bethel American Legion members who graciously allowed us to record on their premises.
There are many kinds of “finish lines” in life, and Michael Kacer has certainly crossed many of them with bravery, stamina and a positive outlook. He continues to inspire us all. This is a story about a genuine war hero that makes our nation proud.
Kacer, 33, is a native of the small-town community of Waymart, Pennsylvania, population approximately 1,300. He was raised by a single-Mom, saw his Dad on weekends and has two older sisters. Kacer was inspired into sports by the younger sister of the two, because he liked the active lifestyle, he said, but it wasn’t until his high school years that he became involved with sports. He ran track, played football, was cheerleader in his senior year and did weight lifting. Kacer said, “I tried basketball but it didn’t work out.”
Kacer first joined Pennsylvania National Guard as a Junior in high school in 1999. He began his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in the summer after his Junior year and completed training after his senior year, he said. He was a Staff Sgt. with the 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry, Pa., and is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, Bravo Company, in New Milford, Pa.
Kacer said as a child he always wanted to join the military. His Dad was a big influence, he said. He was a Combat Medic the military, served two and a half tours of duty in Vietnam, and was a member of Green Beret Special Forces. “The military was just something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Kacer.

Kacer volunteered for and served four tours of duty, one in Bosnia and three in Afghanistan, continuing to fight for our freedom. When asked why he kept volunteering for more tours of duty, he described a scene from the movie Black Hawk Down. He said he identified with a character in the movie who worried about the inexperienced soldiers that had “just signed a military contract” or other soldiers who were fighting because of their beliefs, and he wanted to make sure they’d be okay. He said, “You go back for the guys and women fighting to the left and right of you.”
Michael Kacer was on a mission on foot patrol, assisting another company, when he was wounded in action in June 2008 at age 26. A 110mm rocket came through the roof of a concrete building he was in and landed about ten feet away from him. This resulted in multiple internal and external injuries. He said he had a 6-inch skull fracture, traumatic brain injury (TBI), multiple wounds on his torso and face, ear to ear fractures in about 24 locations, jaw broken in three places, three broken ribs, two collapsed lungs, a severed intestine and a mangled arm, leading to the amputation of his left arm above the elbow. He also suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Several of his buddy soldiers lost their lives in that moment.
Others in his unit were also badly wounded. Kacer said he lost his Medic, age 19, and his Mechanic, age 36, who died instantly. He said a civilian contractor has his right arm severed and his Master Sgt. severed his femoral artery and had severe right forearm damage. All had families who loved them, Kacer said.
A 2008 report from Kacer’s home town newspaper, the Wayne Independent, said that an aunt of Kacer’s, Mary Andzulis, of Pittstown, NJ, indicated that her nephew “pushed one soldier on the floor out of harm’s way and took the brunt of injuries.”
Kacer was eventually flown to Washington, D.C., and admitted to Walter Reed Hospital. His recovery was long and difficult and he still struggles, but he’s come a long way because of his drive and perspective. He is a decorated U.S. Army veteran and he earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart in addition to many other medals.

Kacer represents every soldier who is fighting our wars today, that faces injury and recovery. Kacer’s bravery and dedication are exemplary. He went on to become a celebrated Veteran Athlete.
Today Kacer finds strength and resilience, and inspires others, by continuing his athletic competition and by giving lectures to recovering soldiers fighting for their recovery too. He trains year-round as an “Emerging Athlete” for the U.S. Paralympic Team. (Not to be confused as being on the Paralympic Team, he said.) His sports are the 100m, 200m and Long Jump.
He is a multi-medal-winning star athlete as well as a decorated soldier.
Military Honors: 2008 Bronze Star, Purple Hearts, Meritorious Service Medal, Keystone Freedom Medal, 2004-2005 Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, 3 Army Achievement Medals, 3 Army Commendation Medals, 3 Navy/Marine Achievement Medals.
Athletic Awards: Kacer has won 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medal at the 2014 Invictus Games in the 200m, 4min Concept 2 Row Machine and 100m, respectively. Michael competed four times in the Paralympic Nationals. He won: 3rd in the 100m, and 2nd in the 200m in 2012; 3rd in the 100m and 2nd in the 200m in 2013; 2nd in the 100m, 1st in the 200m in 2014; and 2nd in the 200m in 2015.
Kacer was also chosen to be one of only twelve individuals, out of over 400 nationally, to participate in the Johnson & Johnson and NBC Inaugural 2015 “Triumph Games.” The team is called the “Terrific Twelve” or “T-12.” Each military veteran had to overcome a catastrophic injury, overcome adversity, and have succeeded in athletic games on a national level. The motto of the games is “From War to Winning” and can relate to anything in the lives of military veterans, that they had to overcome. Not all veterans participating in the Triumph Games were deployed. Kacer explains it all very well in the video interview, see below.
“The 12 athletes and two alternates, whose exceptional military service represents the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, embody the best in the human spirit, and are an inspiration to all Americans,” reports NBC.
“We created the Triumph Games to share stories about our nation’s finest veterans, cast on a backdrop of heart-pounding competition. Universal themes of character, struggle, perseverance and personal commitment to excellence, teach us all how to be better versions of ourselves,” said Triumph Games Co-Founder and CEO, Mary L. Hagy.
The Triumph Games are described by NBC as, “The three competitive rounds in the 2015 Triumph Games were filmed in New York, and included a triathlon, a live broadcast video gaming competition, and a motorsports challenge. Each round presented the athletes with unknown circumstances and unfamiliar environments that tested their ability to adapt, and to leverage their physical strength, mental acuity and will to win.”
CBS Sports Network aired the one-hour prime-time television special “The Triumph Games” on Veteran’s Day, November 11th. The program premiered at 7pm ET, 10pm ET and 2am. (Comcast subscribers have access to 20 additional pieces of content in their dedicated “Truimph Games” Channel.) The show is “dedicated to telling the stories of US Military veterans’ remarkable ability to adapt and succeed, no matter what the circumstances” NBC states.
Kacer’s attitude will inspire you. His story is one of courage, stamina and humility.
Kacer’s outlook is: “I was given today, when I didn’t have tomorrow. Leave a mark on the world, how you want to be remembered. Leave this world a better place.”
