The American Cancer Society 22nd Relay For Life of Bethel, Redding, Danbury and Brookfield took place on June 11, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Bethel High School track in Bethel, Ct.. There were 40 teams and 252 participants that helped to raise $77,000! Thanks to everyone who contributed!

The American Cancer Society 22nd Relay For Life of Bethel, Redding, Danbury and Brookfield took place on June 11, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Bethel High School track in Bethel, Ct.. This year the theme of the Relay is “Wishing on a Star.” There were 40 teams and 252 participants that helped to raise $77,000! Thanks to everyone who contributed! Fundraising will continue to August 31st so you can still donate (CLICK HERE).
The top three teams are Pink Ladies ($8,856.00), Scooby Strong ($6,168.00) and Praxair ($5,445.00). The top three individuals are Carol Eagan ($5,713.00), Melissa Andros ($5,145.00), and Laura McCormick ($3,038.00). View all Team and Individual Totals below.
The Relay For Life event began with the Opening Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. which brought everyone together to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer and reminds us all that while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority.
Cancer Survivors took the first lap around the Bethel High School track led by the Bethel NJROTC Colorguard and the Knights of Columbus. The Survivors Lap lets all cancer survivors at the event celebrate their victory over cancer.
The Caregivers lap followed, then other participants joined in. During the Caregivers Lap, anyone who ever cared for someone with cancer walks a special lap so they can be honored. Caregivers can walk this lap with the person they helped if they are also present.
Cancer survivors and caregivers attended the Survivors’ Luncheon at 12:00 noon in the Bethel High School, following the Opening Ceremony.
This year there was a special treat at the luncheon, a spectacular performance by ELVIS PRESLEY! (well, his impersonator, but a great one). “Elvis Remembered” shows are performed by David Devonshuk and all services were donated for the entertainment. View his website here: www.elvisct.com
Besides the wonderful lunch, there were numerous gifts for the survivors, ranging from gift certificates to local businesses and huge baskets full of goodies, to Elvis-themed items such as “Blue Suede Shoes” (fuzzy blue slippers) and a Hot Dogs and Buns Cooker, pertaining to the “You Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog” song theme, and many other items in keeping with Elvis song titles, and other items generously donated by residents and businesses.
Laughter and smiles spread easily around the room as Elvis walked into the audience and interacted with the Relay For Life luncheon guests. Several women got up and danced with Elvis too, and one dancer even had the same name as Elvis’ wife, Priscilla.

A great meal was once again donated by Olive Garden and beverages were donated by Redding Roasters. Dinner and desserts were served later in the Survivor tent on the track field, donated by Rizzutos.
Lively music was kindly donated once again by Crosstown Band, and there was music performed by the Bethel High School Marching Band, the Bethel High School Jazz Band, and the Bethel Tri-M Musicians and Singers.
A very poignant moment was when Survivors and Relay For Life participants gathered at the stage and stories of cancer experiences and triumph were read aloud about Survivors as they and their Caregivers walked down a representative small path lined with Luminaria bags. Survivors danced happily down the path and twirled with glee that they won their battle, have been cancer free for years, or have made significant successful headway in their cancer fight.
The Luminaria bags were lit and the Luminaria Ceremony took place in the evening, after dark, at 9:00 p.m.. At the candlelight Luminaria Ceremony, where participants hold a representative candle (glow stick) as they silently walk around the track, we remember loved ones lost to cancer, support people who currently have cancer, and honor people who fought cancer in the past. It’s a powerful part of the event because it provides an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.
The Closing Ceremony celebrates what we all just accomplished together. It’s also a time to remember the lives of those lost, and to commit to continuing the fight against this disease over the next year.

Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.
Celebrate
During a Relay event, participants and survivors celebrate what they’ve overcome.
Remember
We remember people lost to the disease, and honor people who have fought or are fighting cancer.
Fight Back
The event inspires Relay participants to take action against a disease that has taken too much.
