Burlington, VT – Law enforcement in Vermont is actively searching for a 34-year-old mother, accused of negligence and drug use that allegedly led to the drowning of her 3-month-old daughter earlier this year. The case has drawn statewide attention due to the tragic circumstances and ongoing manhunt.
Incident Details: Infant Found Unresponsive
According to the Burlington Police Department, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Oct. 4, 2024, at an apartment on Main Street in Burlington. Responding officers found Briana Arnold, 34, attempting to perform CPR on her daughter, Sapphira Tanita Perez Sanchez, who had drowned in a bathtub. Paramedics continued lifesaving measures and rushed the infant to a nearby hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The case was subsequently referred to the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations (CUSI), a multi-agency task force focused on crimes against children in Vermont.
Evidence of Drug Use and Negligence
Following the child’s death, investigators executed a search warrant at the apartment. Authorities say they discovered an open container in the stove, later determined to contain fentanyl.
A blood sample from Arnold revealed the presence of benzoylecgonine, fentanyl, norfentanyl, and methadone, suggesting she was under the influence of multiple narcotics at the time of the incident.
Police allege that while intoxicated, Arnold left her daughter unattended in a filling bathtub, resulting in the fatal drowning.
Charges and Arrest Warrant
On Oct. 27, 2024, a court approved arrest warrants for Arnold. She now faces multiple charges, including:
- Involuntary manslaughter
- Cruelty to a child resulting in death
- Possession of narcotics
CUSI officials report that Arnold has made contact with law enforcement but has refused to turn herself in or meet with authorities.
Community Assistance Requested
Authorities are urging the public to assist in locating Arnold. Residents are encouraged to contact CUSI directly or the local police department if they have information regarding her whereabouts.
Officials emphasize that anyone with tips or sightings could play a critical role in bringing the suspect into custody and providing closure for the family of Sapphira Tanita Perez Sanchez.
