Guthrie, OK – A person was airlifted to a hospital after their vehicle crashed and became lodged in a tree off southbound Interstate 35 north of Guthrie, according to authorities. The incident caused a temporary highway shutdown and significant traffic delays during the morning hours.
The crash occurred near Midwest Boulevard, where the vehicle veered off the highway and collided with a tree. Sky 5 pilot Chase Rutledge reported seeing the scene from above, noting that the car was stuck in the tree and emergency responders were actively managing the situation.
Emergency Response and Airlift
Both the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Guthrie Fire Department responded to the crash, briefly closing southbound lanes of I-35 to secure the area and assist the injured person. According to officials, a medical helicopter was used to transport the individual to a nearby hospital. The person’s current condition has not been released, pending updates from medical authorities.
Rutledge, who witnessed the scene from the air, confirmed seeing the medical helicopter depart with the patient. The quick response of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and local fire personnel helped ensure the scene was cleared efficiently and safely.
Highway Closure and Traffic Delays
While the highway was temporarily closed, motorists experienced backups of 2-3 miles in the area, Rutledge reported. The closure was necessary to safely remove the vehicle and allow emergency crews to perform their work without endangering drivers.
Authorities confirmed that a tow truck was called to remove the vehicle from the tree, allowing traffic to resume on southbound I-35. Officials emphasized the importance of driving cautiously near accident scenes, as sudden stops and lane changes can create additional hazards.
Investigation Ongoing
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the crash to determine its cause. At this time, it is unclear whether speed, weather, or mechanical failure contributed to the incident. Investigators are also working to confirm the identity and condition of the person transported to the hospital.
Officials are urging drivers in the area to remain alert and obey all traffic warnings, especially near Guthrie and other areas prone to high-speed highway accidents.
