Tyler Woman Mauled to Death by Dogs She was Caring For; Family Left Devastated

Tyler, Texas — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Tyler, Texas, where 23-year-old Madison Riley, a college student, was mauled to death by three pit bulls she was dog-sitting. The attack occurred on Friday afternoon, leaving the community stunned and her family devastated.

Authorities say Riley was found unresponsive in the backyard of a home she had been caring for, with the attack already underway when first responders arrived.

Neighbor Calls 911 as Violent Attack Unfolds

At approximately 4:15 p.m., a neighbor dialed 911 after witnessing a violent attack taking place behind the residence. Deputies from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded.

According to the sheriff’s office, the three pit bulls were still aggressively engaged when deputies reached the scene. Sergeant Larry Christian, public information officer, described the tense moments that followed.

“The dogs then diverted their attention. All three of them to him… He unholstered his service weapon and fired at one of the dogs, killing it,” Sergeant Christian said as per The Post.

The remaining dogs were secured as investigators worked to determine what prompted the deadly attack.

Heartbroken Mother Says Dogs Had “Loved Her” Before

Riley’s grieving mother, Jennifer Hubbell, said her daughter had mentioned a recent change in the dogs’ behavior, though they had previously “seemed to love her.”

Hubbell recounted receiving the devastating call and collapsing to her knees upon learning her daughter had been killed.

“She said that they hadn’t always been that way,” Hubbell told the outlet, still trying to understand what caused the sudden aggression.

Experienced Dog-Sitter and Beloved Student

Riley was known as a dedicated animal lover and had experience caring for pets and children. She had babysat for the homeowners’ children for extended periods and believed that watching their dogs “would be an okay situation,” her mother said.

The homeowners were reportedly out of town, leaving Riley in charge of the pets. It remains unclear whether she was also caring for the children at the time of the attack.

Six Months Away from Graduating

The tragedy struck just six months before Riley was set to graduate from the University of Texas at Tyler. She was studying early childhood education, a passion shaped partly by the experiences of her younger brother, who has autism.

Her family described her as compassionate, hardworking, and deeply committed to caring for others.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials have not announced whether additional action will be taken regarding the surviving pit bulls or whether charges could be filed. The investigation remains active.

Authorities continue gathering information to understand what triggered the deadly attack in a home where Riley believed she was safe.

This heartbreaking case raises difficult questions about pet safety, dog-sitting, and responsibility. What do you think needs to change to prevent tragedies like this? Share your thoughts and condolences in the comments below.
