Randolph County, NC — Two people were seriously injured Thursday evening after a high-speed chase involving a Randolph County deputy ended in a violent rollover crash on U.S. Highway 64, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
The chase began after a deputy recognized a female driver with multiple active warrants at a local gas station and attempted to take her into custody.
Deputy Dragged Before Chase Begins
Authorities say the incident started when the deputy approached the suspect’s vehicle at a gas station on U.S. Highway 64 and attempted to arrest her.
“When the deputy tried to take the female driver into custody, she refused to get out of the vehicle and drove away, dragging the deputy a short distance,” investigators reported.
The deputy was able to free himself and call for assistance as the suspect fled the scene. Responding deputies quickly initiated a pursuit.
According to MyFox8, the chase stretched along U.S. Highway 64, with speeds increasing as deputies deployed stop sticks, which the driver managed to avoid.
PIT Maneuver and Overturned Vehicle
As the pursuit continued, deputies used a PIT maneuver to force the vehicle to spin, temporarily halting the chase. However, the driver regained control and continued fleeing. Moments later, the suspect’s vehicle lost control in a curve and overturned.
“The vehicle eventually lost control in a curve and overturned,” the sheriff’s office confirmed.
Both the driver and a passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. A third occupant was uninjured and released at the scene.
Driver Had Multiple Warrants
Investigators said the driver had numerous outstanding misdemeanor and felony warrants at the time of the chase. These include:
- Failure to heed lights and sirens
- Reckless driving
- Driving while license revoked
- Speeding
- Window tint violation
- Driving left of center
- Unsafe passing
- Felony identity theft
- Resisting a public officer
- Failure to appear on a probation violation (Randolph County)
- Two counts of failure to appear on felony larceny (Forsyth County)
Officials say additional charges will likely be filed following a full investigation into the pursuit and crash.
Investigation Ongoing
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident remains under active investigation. Deputies are reviewing dashboard and body camera footage as part of their review.
“This case highlights the dangers law enforcement face daily during traffic stops and pursuits,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved pending medical evaluations and formal charging procedures.
