HOUSTON, Texas – Two deputies were injured early Thursday morning after their patrol units were struck by a suspected drunk driver on Beltway 8 at Ella, according to Harris County Pct. 4 Constable Mark Herman.
Incident Details
Authorities reported that the deputies were responding to an incident on the Sam Houston Toll Road when 32-year-old Wilfredo Chaves Arzola allegedly slammed into their vehicles.
- One deputy, a male Corporal, was airlifted to the hospital via LifeFlight.
- The second deputy, a female officer, was transported by ambulance.
- The crash forced officials to close the toll road for several hours before reopening it later in the morning.
Injuries and Recovery
The deputies sustained leg, hip, and head injuries as a result of the crash. As per reports –
- The female deputy, who has served with Pct. 4 for more than two years, was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon.
- The male Corporal, a deputy with over four years of service, underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. However, Constable Herman emphasized that he faces a long road to recovery.
Suspect Arrested
The suspected driver, Wilfredo Chaves Arzola, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Harris County Jail. He is facing multiple charges, including:
- Intoxication assault with serious bodily injury to a peace officer
- Reckless aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to a peace officer
At this time, his bond and court appearance date have not been set.
