Layton, Utah – Two men were arrested in Layton, Utah after authorities discovered they were transporting nearly 60 pounds of methamphetamine, officials said. The bust involved coordination between local and federal law enforcement agencies and highlights ongoing efforts to combat large-scale drug trafficking in the region.
Suspects and Charges
The suspects were identified as Arnulfo Ruiz Mendez, 42, and Gabriel Edwin Mendez Franco, 23. Both were arrested on Saturday and face charges of distribution, offering, or arranging the distribution of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony.
Authorities also noted that Mendez does not have legal status in the United States, and an immigration hold was requested to ensure he remains in custody pending further proceedings.
How the Investigation Unfolded
The arrest stemmed from a carefully planned investigation by the Davis County Task Force, in cooperation with the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force and the FBI.
According to the affidavit, a confidential source had contact with a source of supply (SOS) based in Mexico. The SOS arranged to deliver a substantial amount of methamphetamine to Utah and confirmed that the drug courier was on the way.
The officer coordinated with the courier through the confidential source, eventually setting up a controlled delivery at the Hilton Garden Inn in Layton. Agents monitored the suspects as they entered the hotel lobby and followed them to their room, as per KUTV.
Arrest and Drug Seizure
Authorities waited for the suspects to move toward the hotel parking lot before executing the arrest. Once apprehended, agents found approximately 56 pounds of methamphetamine in a large bag inside Mendez’s truck.
Officials reported that Mendez admitted he was transporting the drugs from Phoenix, Arizona, to Layton in exchange for payment. Meanwhile, Franco was reportedly returning to Mexico via Oregon after completing the delivery.
The seizure represents a significant bust, given the quantity of meth involved and the potential street value of the drugs, which could supply a large area for several months.
