Cookeville, TN – The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), in coordination with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Task Force and the Algood Police Department, arrested Kevin Otey, a confirmed gang member, during a drug and weapons seizure on Wednesday.
The bust highlights ongoing efforts to combat gang-related crime and illegal drug activity in the region.
Search Warrant and Evidence Seized
At approximately 8:40 a.m., deputies executed a search warrant at a residence on the 700 block of Cardinal Street in Cookeville. During the operation, Otey was spotted driving near the home and was subsequently pulled over by law enforcement.
The search of the residence led to the recovery of:
- Cocaine
- 126 grams of marijuana
- Two firearms, including a 12-gauge shotgun and a 9mm pistol, with additional ammunition
- Drug paraphernalia
- $3,869 in cash
According to reports, the authorities say these items suggest involvement in manufacture, delivery, and sale of controlled substances.
Gang Affiliation and Criminal Record
Kevin Otey is a confirmed member of the “Traveling Vice Lords” gang, a group known for its involvement in drug trafficking, violent crime, and organized criminal activity.
- Otey is a felon with multiple prior convictions, further escalating the severity of his charges.
- He faces two counts of manufacture, delivery, and sale of a controlled substance, and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon.
- Otey was booked into the Putnam County Jail on an $850,000 bond.
Authorities stressed that gang-affiliated individuals with criminal histories often pose heightened risks to community safety, particularly when involved in illegal drug distribution.
Law Enforcement Perspective
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the importance of multi-agency collaboration in combating organized crime.
“This arrest and seizure demonstrate our commitment to keeping our community safe from drug trafficking and violent crime,” PCSO officials said.
The operation also underscores the effectiveness of the HIDTA Task Force, which targets high-intensity drug trafficking areas and coordinates across county and state lines to dismantle criminal networks.
Community Impact
Residents in Cookeville have expressed relief at the removal of drugs and weapons from the streets, especially given Otey’s gang ties and prior criminal record. Community members say that gang activity and drug sales have long been a concern, particularly for neighborhoods near major roadways and local schools.
Local officials urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement to prevent further criminal incidents.
Broader Context
The “Traveling Vice Lords” gang is part of a network with a history of drug trafficking, violent crimes, and organized theft across Tennessee and neighboring states. Arrests like Otey’s are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt these operations before they escalate further.
Law enforcement also reminds citizens that gang involvement often increases the likelihood of illegal firearms possession and violent incidents, making public awareness and community cooperation crucial.
