Town of Bethel Newly Elected Officials Take Oath of Office, Dec. 7
The Town of Bethel’s Oath of Office Ceremony for Newly Elected Officials took place Monday, December 7, 2015, in the Bethel Middle School Auditorium, David W. Deakin Educational Park, Bethel, Ct.
The Ceremony began at 7:00 p.m. with the presentation of colors by the Bethel High School NJROTC color guard. The National Anthem was sung by Sarah Rockmacher and the Pledge of Allegiance followed. The invocation was by Karen Cook of the United Methodist Church.
A moment of silence was held in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
The Oath of Office was administered to newly elected Officials by the State of Connecticut Comptroller Kevin Lembo.
Comments were made by Selectman Paul Szatkowski, Selectman Richard Straiton and First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker, in that order.
Selectman Szatkowski said, in part, “I know many of you heard here, during the selection process, “People Before Politics,” but I can assure you here tonight that the mechanisms of our town government follow that rule. It’s always been my philosophy that during an election period during the period between September and the first Tuesday in November the political hat comes on. Thereafter I’m just like you, a Bethelite, a taxpayer, and now a person representing the town, nothing more, nothing less.” He continued, “To our residents and taxpayers, all of us are here tonight because of your choice that we should administrate this town on various boards and commissions.I can pledge to you tonight that we will keep Bethel and all of its New England charm, control its growth, maintain its excellence in education, and most importantly keep it affordable for its residents.”
Selectman Straiton said, in part, “I would also like to thanks the voters for having trust in me and my colleagues and returning us to the town offices. I think we have shown in the past that we, Paul, Matt and I, can work together by putting the town’s people of Bethel first, and not politics. There’s always a lot to do in town and in the future there’s going to be a lot more things to come. For me personally I enjoy being a member of the Public Utilities. My father and brother worked for the town for many years. They were involved in the Water and Sewer Departments, and to be part of the prevailing improvements to our water and swears system is very rewarding to me to be part of that. There are many projects going on in our community that I have been fortunate to be involved in. The Energy Conservation for the municipal buildings and the educational buildings, the new water pumping stations, the road improvement, and we’re still trying to work for a new home for our teens. I previously served on many building committees, all of which still serve our community today. As a native of the town I have seen it grown over the years and I’ve been very proud to be part of is community, to call Bethel my home.”
First selectman Knickerbocker said, in part, “The other day I had an opportunity to spend a few minutes with Connecticut’s ranking US Senator, Dick Blumenthal. He made a comment that I thought was so appropriate for our ceremony this evening that I am going to steal it for my remarks tonight. While attending the swearing in ceremony in one of our neighboring towns, he referred to this gathering, what we are doing here tonight, as a ‘Celebration of Democracy.’ I thought that was such a perfect way to describe it. It reminded me of how amazing and unique our form of governing ourselves in this nation truly is. And that is especially true here at the local level, where people get to know each other very well, and all of your elected officials are easily accessible. Every two years, new people, with new ideas and new energy and new enthusiasm earn the opportunity to serve. The process results in constant turnover and constant change. These are things that most big corporations try to avoid. And yet, here where your local government can have such an impact on your schools, on your quality of life, on your property values and so on, we do not shy away from the turmoil change can bring. We embrace it, and we use the new ideas and new energies people bring with them to keep our town moving into the future. That is truly an achievement to celebrate.”
The Benediction was by Karen Cook of the United Methodist Church.
Dessert reception followed. The public was invited to join this celebration. Bethel Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christine Carver and Connecticut State Representatives Dan Carter and Stephen Harding also attended.
