Monona, WI – A dramatic police chase on Saturday ended with a Madison police officer seriously injured after a tow truck driver allegedly fled from authorities and endangered multiple vehicles along Highway 51 and surrounding roads.
The Pursuit
The tow truck, driven by 36-year-old Christopher P. Brugger of Madison, was first reported for reckless driving. Officers spotted the vehicle at a BP gas station on East Broadway, but as authorities approached, Brugger sped away, initiating a chase that spanned multiple roads and parking lots, including Monona Drive and Broadway.
During the pursuit, a sedan on the flatbed of the tow truck slid onto the roadway, further increasing the danger to nearby drivers. The tow truck also struck an object on Highway 51 before the chase continued toward Terminal Drive.
Collision and Officer Injury
The pursuit came to a violent end when the tow truck collided with a Madison police squad car, causing serious injuries to the officer inside. Following the crash, Brugger attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after by responding officers.
Authorities confirmed to the WKOW that the officer’s injuries are serious, and thoughts remain with the injured officer, their family, and colleagues, according to Assistant Chief Deuman of the Madison Police Department.
Charges and Investigation
Brugger now faces multiple charges, including:
- Felony eluding
- Reckless driving
- Resisting an officer
Additional traffic violations are also pending. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the crash involving the Madison squad car.
