Tour Bus Rollover on New York State Thruway Kills 5, Dozens Injured, Authorities Say

Pembroke, NY — A tragic bus rollover on the New York State Thruway left five people dead and dozens injured Friday afternoon as tourists returning from Niagara Falls lost control of their vehicle, authorities confirmed.

Driver Distraction Leads to Deadly Rollover

According to New York State Police, the bus, carrying 54 passengers including the driver and a tour company employee, rolled over near Pembroke, about 40 miles east of Niagara Falls, shortly after 12:20 p.m.

“Several witnesses observed the bus lose control, enter the median, then cross to the southern shoulder and overturn,” said the New York State Police in a statement.

Officials said the bus driver became distracted, overcorrected, and caused the bus to roll over on the interstate. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Passengers Thrown From Bus; Rescue Efforts Underway

The bus was heavily damaged, and most passengers were not wearing seat belts, resulting in several being ejected while others were trapped inside. First responders—including ground and air ambulances, state and local police, and tow trucks—rushed to the scene to assist victims.

  • Passengers ranged in age from 1 to 74 years old, with no child fatalities reported, contrary to earlier reports.
  • Many of the passengers were from China and the Philippines, and translators were brought in to help authorities communicate with those who spoke little English.

Authorities temporarily shut down both eastbound and westbound lanes to respond to the crash, causing major traffic delays. The lanes were reopened later in the day.

Hospitals Prepare for Mass Casualties

Two regional hospitals were alerted to receive multiple victims simultaneously. At least 30 people were transported with injuries ranging from critical to minor, including head injuries, internal trauma, and broken bones.

  • Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, received 24 patients, 20 of whom are actively being treated.

“We were able to take care of all patients very quickly,” said Dr. Jennifer Pugh, chief of emergency medicine.

  • University of Rochester Medical Center received six victims by air and ground ambulance, with two in critical condition and four stable, including one pediatric patient.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the rollover. Mechanical failure, operator impairment, and intoxication have been ruled out.

“It’s too early to determine whether any charges will be filed,” said Maj. Andre J. Ray, New York State Police troop commander.

Officials Respond to Tragedy

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the crash as “tragic” and praised the quick response of first responders.

“They are working to rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved,” Governor Hochul posted on X.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of seatbelt use on buses and the vigilance required by drivers, especially when transporting large groups of passengers.
