Lubbock, TX — Thousands of residents in Lubbock and the South Plains were left without power, and some area roadways were flooded, as potent thunderstorms rolled through the region Friday night into Saturday.
An initial line of storms, which dropped heavy rainfall and produced frequent lightning, prompted a flood advisory. The storms quickly brought up to an inch of rain, with more expected, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock. The city issued an alert, warning that Erskine Street was closed between North Frankford and North Indiana avenues due to flooding.
Power Outages and Ongoing Storm Threats
By 1 a.m., more than 10,000 customers were without power around Lubbock, according to Lubbock Power & Light‘s outage map. Power restoration efforts were ongoing, as crews worked to address the widespread outages caused by the storms.
The National Weather Service has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue through the weekend and into next week. Severe storms, some capable of producing strong gusts over 50 mph, are also in the forecast for the region.
“Chances for storms, some severe, will return Saturday afternoon across portions of the forecast area, with locally heavy rainfall and strong gusts in excess of 50 mph expected,” the weather service outlook reads. “Thunderstorm chances will then increase area-wide Saturday night, with a greater risk for flash flooding Saturday night and into Sunday morning across the entire forecast area.”
Flash Flooding Risk
The storms have brought significant risks for flash flooding as they move through the region. Localized areas are especially vulnerable, and the National Weather Service has cautioned the public to stay alert as storm conditions continue to develop throughout the weekend.
Community Response and Preparations
As the storms continue, local officials and emergency responders are working to mitigate the impact of the flooding and power outages. Authorities urge residents to avoid driving in flooded areas and to stay informed via local alerts.
With more storms expected, residents in the South Plains are being advised to prepare for additional challenges over the coming days.
