Cleveland, OH — Thousands of residents across Northeast Ohio were left without power on Sunday night as strong storms and heavy rain swept through the region. Utility crews worked late into the night to restore service to affected areas as flash flooding and downed lines were reported.
According to FirstEnergy, Lorain County was among the hardest hit, with nearly 6,000 outages reported Sunday evening. By around 10:45 p.m., most of those outages had been restored, but several other counties continued to experience disruptions.
Power Outages Across Multiple Counties
As of late Sunday night, the following counties were still experiencing power outages:
- Cuyahoga County: 380 customers without power
- Geauga County: 102 outages
- Lake County: 164 outages
- Lorain County: 60 outages
- Ottawa County: 680 outages
- Trumbull County: 138 outages
Utility officials said restoration crews were responding quickly but cautioned that additional rainfall and lightning could slow progress in certain areas.
“Our crews are working as safely and efficiently as possible to restore power to every customer impacted by these storms,” FirstEnergy said in a public update.
The outage data was first reported by FOX 8 Cleveland, which also warned that more rain is expected to continue through Monday, potentially leading to new outages in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
More Rain and Flood Risks Ahead
Meteorologists say that while the worst of the storms have passed, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will remain in the forecast for parts of northern Ohio. Residents are advised to prepare for ponding on roads, downed tree limbs, and possible flash flooding overnight.
The National Weather Service has urged residents to avoid driving through flooded streets and to report any downed power lines to local authorities rather than attempting to move debris themselves.
“If you see a downed power line, assume it’s live and dangerous,” officials said. “Stay at least 30 feet away and contact your local power company or emergency services.”
Restoration Efforts Underway
As weather conditions improved late Sunday, crews were able to restore power to most affected areas. However, Ottawa and Cuyahoga counties were still reporting scattered outages as of midnight. Officials expect full restoration by early Monday morning if weather conditions hold steady.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from their local emergency management offices and keep flashlights, backup batteries, and mobile chargers on hand in case of renewed power interruptions.
