The Bethel Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) is part of a national organization for 11th and 12th grade high school students that seeks to honor students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Thirty-Four Bethel High School Students Were Inducted into the National Honor Society in a BHS Ceremony on Nov. 24th
Bethel High School (BHS) is proud to announce that thirty-four junior and senior students were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, in a formal induction ceremony held in the BHS auditorium.
The Bethel Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) is part of a national organization for 11th and 12th grade high school students that seeks to honor students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
The event began a 7 p.m. with a welcome by the BHS Jazz Band and a musical processional by the *BHS Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Current Chapter members entered the auditorium wearing burgundy robes for NHS board members and black robes for other NHS members, all with gold honor society sashes, and they walked to a seating area on the stage. New inductees entered the auditorium wearing white robes and were seated in the audience, left side.
The NJROTC Color Guard presented the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. The singing of the National Anthem was by members of the Tri-M Honor Society.
Since the main focus of National Honor Society is service, the guest speaker chosen was Ms. Patricia Deuschel, who works with the American Cancer Society and has volunteered through Relay For Life. She spoke about the value of service. “What I’d like to get across is, the kids here, the kids on this stage and the folks who are coming in, are going to make a huge impact on all of our lives, especially in service,” she said.
Deuschel referred to the NHS quality of character and said, “I can’t always remember a person’s name but I can remember the impression they left upon me. Were they kind? compassionate? Were they fun? Were they hard working? I hope they will remember me as well.”
She said, regarding leadership, “You don’t need to be a bold and loud leader … we certainly have politicians who are really loud, and have really bold ideas, but you can also find that there are some of the greatest leaders actually a little more quiet, maybe a little more reserved, think Bill Gates or maybe Mother Teresa. These are people who have lead … in capacities that are quiet, not noticed, but are making huge differences in our world. So that’s something I think you should really focus on.”

The symbolism of the NHS was recited by NHS Vice President Molly Dolman (Scholarship), Secretary Tracey Keane (Service), Eshan Dalal (Leadership) and Kendall Meehan (Character). To highlight these core values of the National Honor Society they then each lit a large candle.

The names of the new inductees were read and they walked across the stage to the center where a table with the NHS banner and candles was displayed. The induction of the new members included a candle-lighting ceremony of a smaller candle, as the flame was lit from the larger candles, to represent the school and the national NHS council. The inductees then signed the register, received their NHS gold sash and all new inductees then recited the NHS pledge together before being formally inducted into the school’s chapter.
“I (state name), being aware of the honor, which is being bestowed upon me by my selection for membership in the National Honor Society, do hereby pledge loyalty to this organization. It shall be my earnest purpose to give unsparingly of my time and energy toward the promotion of all school activities. I will strive to be at all times a model student, and will never knowingly bring reproach upon my school. I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this society for which I have been selected striving in every way by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life.”
