‘Bethel Shakes’ is a New, Old-Fashioned, Soda Fountain / General Store / Bar, Opening in Bethel April 11

The establishment will be an old-fashioned soda fountain, serving ice cream shakes and other drinks, along with a general store that will sell everything from hand made soaps to Bethel school sportswear to hardware… but with a SURPRISING TWIST.

How wonderful it is to see so many businesses opening up in Bethel recently, and now we will soon have the “Bethel Shakes,” a most unusual business. The establishment will be an old-fashioned soda fountain for young and old alike, along with a general store that will sell everything from hand made soaps to Bethel school sportswear to hardware, in the daytime hours.  It will also sell old-fashioned ice cream shakes and other drinks, served at the vintage-inspired soda fountain, drinks that you can enjoy while you shop.

Here’s the twist, the soda fountain will turn into a bar that will sell liquor, in the evening hours, just for adults of course.  What’s also different about this establishment is that they plan on recreating the old stores of long ago, both in how they design the interior and in the merchandise they sell, and more.

Imagine being able to sit at antique tables and in the very same antique chairs people sat in 100 years ago, or read the newspapers and books that were around then too, while you enjoy your refreshment?  Table tops will be decorated in these materials, and bookshelves will line the walls filled with books popular from a time years ago, all books and furniture are for sale too.  There will be roving musicians using antique instruments, singing old-fashioned tunes for your amusement. Store employees will wear top hats in honor of the old hat factories that used to be here.

Also in honor of the old hat factory that used to be prosperous, all the drinks, or “Bethel Shakes,” from the old-fashioned soda fountain will be named after words that stemmed from ailments that effected hat manufacturing workers in those days, names such as “Mercury Poisoning,” “Hatter Shake,” and “Mad Hatter.”  The store name “Bethel Shakes” stems from the “shakes” ailment, when mercury poisoning in the hatmaking industries of Danbury, Connecticut gave rise to the expression “the Danbury shakes.”   Read more about mad hatter disease here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_hatter_disease. 

Yes these drink names are controversial, to say the least, but expect this business to be anything but normal!  And it does reflect the real history of the area.  Think about what P.T. Barnum would have done here.

Bethel resident and “Bethel Shakes” business owner Lewis Carroll (yes ironically the same name as the author of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”) will definitely play up the “Alice in Wonderland / Mad Hatter” crazy tea party theme. Carroll said that employees had to audition to get their jobs, in other words, they needed to have an acting background.  This is because they will be acting the part of “symptoms of madness” as they wait on customers, reminiscent of the nervous disorders and odd behavior stemming from mercury poisoning.  Carroll said he always had a fascination with the “Mad Hatter” theme ever since he was a child and he realized the author of that story had the same name as him.

This certainly will prove to be a most interesting new business here in Bethel!  Look for the grand opening information to come shortly.  I was told to keep the actual address of the business a secret until further information comes forward.  Owners do not want anyone taking a peek at the decor before the renovation and interior design is done. I thought I’d give you a little tidbit now and more info. later. (Hint: it’s in an old Bethel building.)

Carroll said he decided to build his unusual business in Bethel because “It is the perfect quaint quirky New England town, and P.T. Barnum would have loved this too.”

He then twirled his hat, laughed in a strange manner, and said, “There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger! Some say to survive it: You need to be as mad as a hatter,” and he walked away donning his cane and top hat once more. (The line is from “The Mad Hatter.”)

So is it a store?  a theater?  a bar? a soda fountain?  an antique shop? a book store?  Seems like all the above!

Carroll finally turned around once more and said, “You used to be much more…”muchier.” You’ve lost your muchness.”

Bethel is going to love this!
