Sioux Falls, SD — As Thanksgiving week approaches, residents should brace for a mix of gusty winds, accumulating snow, and below-average temperatures. Forecasters warn that a strong low-pressure system moving through the region will bring a variety of weather hazards, impacting travel and outdoor activities.
Strong Winds Expected
A low-pressure system advancing from North Dakota is set to push east-southeastward, bringing gusty winds to the area. Wind advisories and high wind warnings remain in effect through Tuesday night.
Gusts could reach 50 to 60 mph, creating hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and exercise caution when traveling during the high winds.
Winter Weather Moving In
Along with wind, the incoming low-pressure system will also bring moisture on Tuesday, starting as rain in the northeast before switching to snow as colder air moves in behind the low.
Winter weather advisories are currently in effect for:
Roberts, Marshall, Day, Brown, McPherson, Edmunds, Walworth, Campbell, and Corson Counties.
- Brown and Day Counties: until 12 a.m. CST Wednesday
- All other counties: until 6 p.m. CST / 5 p.m. MST Tuesday
Forecasters predict several inches of accumulating snow, especially near and north of US Highway 12 and along the Coteau. Snow accumulation is also likely toward Watertown and along the Highway 212 corridor. Combined with strong winds, travel will be hazardous in affected areas.
Snow Departs, But Cold Weather Remains
The snow is expected to move out by early Wednesday, but gusty winds will continue. This will set the stage for chilly temperatures leading into Thanksgiving Day. Expect below-average temperatures through the weekend and into the start of next week.
Looking Ahead: Another Snow Chance
As Black Friday and the weekend approach, forecasters note another potential widespread snow event as a new low-pressure system tracks. Meteorologists caution that timing and track forecasts have already changed significantly between Sunday and Monday, and additional updates are likely. Travelers and residents should stay tuned to local forecasts for the latest information.
