Texas Mother Faces 14 Charges after Drunk-Driving Crash Injures Six Children, One in Critical Condition

San Antonio, Texas — A 31-year-old Texas mother, identified as Brittany Winston, is facing a long list of 14 charges after allegedly driving drunk and crashing her Ford Explorer into a pole, injuring all six of her children inside the vehicle, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred on Friday around 1:40 p.m. along Binz-Engleman Road, on the eastern edge of San Antonio, where authorities say Winston was traveling at a high rate of speed before drifting off the roadway.

Charges Include Assault, Child Injury & Aggravated Assault

According to officials, Winston is charged with:

  • Two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle
  • Six counts of injury to a child
  • Six counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury

She is currently detained on a $600,000 bond.

Crash Leaves SUV Crushed, Children Injured Inside and Outside the Vehicle

Deputies arriving at the scene found the SUV “heavily damaged”, with several children injured both inside and outside the wreckage. The children’s ages range from 2 to 12 years old, officials said.

Everyone in the vehicle, including Winston, was transported to a nearby hospital. As of Monday, authorities reported:

  • An 11-year-old girl remains in critical condition
  • Winston and the remaining children suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were later released

Vehicle Was Speeding and No One Was Wearing Seat Belts

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office revealed that forensic analysis of the Ford Explorer confirmed the SUV was traveling over 20 mph above the 45 mph speed limit at the time of the crash.

Even more alarming, deputies confirmed that no occupants were wearing seat belts.

Investigators later learned Winston exhibited clear signs of intoxication.

Hospital Tests Show Alcohol Above Legal Limit, Presence of Controlled Substances

Hospital staff notified investigators that Winston’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit, and she also tested positive for controlled substances, though the exact substances have not been confirmed publicly.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing to determine all factors that contributed to the crash.

Court Dates and Previous Incidents

Winston is scheduled to appear in court on February 25 for the charges stemming from Friday’s crash.

However, this is not her only pending legal matter. According to KSAT, Winston was already due in court this Tuesday after being involved in another crash in November 2024.

Additionally, records show that her driver’s license had previously been revoked or suspended in 2013, before eventually being reinstated.

Officials emphasize that additional charges could emerge as the investigation continues.
