The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.

In a ceremony held at Bethel High School on November 12, 2015, at 7pm, ten Bethel High School (BHS) students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Rachel Salvador (vocalist), Cameron Klinefelter (piano), Ruben Morais (trumpet), Gia Antolini (piano), Eric Fehr (flute), Jesse Sage-Robinson (clarinet), Dean Havelock (trumpet), *Jill Rogers (viola), Jillian Paulin (viola) and Chase Gray (vocalist).

*Jill Rogers was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society but not present for the ceremony due to a previous engagement.

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.  The three “M” initials in “Tri-M” stand for “Modern Music Masters.”

Tri-M is under the sponsorship and supervision of The National Association for Music Education (NAfME), 1806 Robert Fulton Drive, Reston, VA 20191.

Tri-M is composed of senior chapters and junior chapters. Grade levels for Tri-M Senior chapters are 10, 11, and 12. Grade levels for Tri-M Junior chapters are 6, 7, and 8.  9th Grade may be included in either a Senior or Junior chapter depending on the school structure.

All students who wished to join the Tri-M Music Honor Society had to audition at BHS in front of a panel of judges, the present Bethel Chapter Tri-M members and Bethel High School music teacher Mr. Damon Coachman.  Ten individuals were selected and were honored at last night’s ceremony and each received a certificate. Mr. Coachman is the advisor for the Tri-M Honor Society in the Bethel Chapter and conducted the audition process.

Tri-M membership includes the responsibility of promoting music in the community through fundraising and social projects.  Inductees will now participate in accomplishing that goal, either in individual projects or in a members group.  The chapter also conducts frequent meetings at BHS. Members can offer musical guidance to other students of all the schools in the Bethel Public School system by making arrangements to do so with teachers or administrators.

Last night’s induction ceremony began with a vocal performance of the National Anthem by Tri-M members Martha Kenny, Alyssa Schneider, Allee Feuerman, Sara Rockmacher and Abby Bozzuti.

BHS sophomore Ben Fitzpatrick performed improvisation on saxophone and Bethel Tri-M President Bridget Kennedy sang “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley, and performed on guitar, each in individual performances.

Guest Speaker was Ms. Susan Cody, who gave an inspirational speech to the new inductees and audience members including parents, emphasizing the importance of music.
Cory believes that music begins in us as soon as we are born.  She said, “What occurs to me, in fact, is that all of us have been singing from the day we were born, because really, in my view, that’s the first thing you hear.  Some people call it crying. I call it singing.  If you think about it, it had all the elements.  It was sustained pitch, it had rhythm, and it was passionate. What better description is there?  And of course music, I think that we need to remember, is one of those distinguishing features that makes us human.”

Cory points out the connection between music and speech, and said, “Neurobiologists are discovering all kinds of new things about how human beings are put together and one of the things they discovered is that our brains are hardwired for music in the same way we are hardwired for speech and so that every one of of us is born musical.”

“One of the things I wanted to say to you tonight is that induction into this society names you as music’s elite, here at Bethel High School, and that’s wonderful.  But you didn’t get here just by being good.  You didn’t get here just by natural raw talent. You got here because in your history people honored your natural musicality.  They honored the musical ability.  I want every one of you to be grateful to your parents for doing this, and Mr. Coachman, and Ms. Neville and every music teacher you ever had,” Cory said, believing that musicians should be thankful for all the help and opportunities they’ve gotten in music in their lives so far.  “We musicians who get to do this need to be humbled by that experience and to be grateful for everyone who put us on this path,” Cory said, “Everyone who has pushed us along that path deserves to be remembered and deserves to be honored because we are here today.”

About guest speaker Ms. Susan Cory:
Ms. Susan Cody is the Music Director of New Era Creative Space (NECS), a community based educational center located in Peekskill, NY, with the mission of enriching the lives of children and youth by helping them to develop lifelong interests and skills through the engagement in creative activities. NECS also aims to serve as a resource center for parents and families in order to help support the social, emotional and spiritual development of the child.  Susan Cody studied music at Ithaca College. She is a full time private music teacher since 1979, mostly piano, but flute and voice as well. She has taught classroom music and created a series of classes in the elements of music called “What’s That Sound?” Susan Cody has been the Music Director for The Children’s Theatre Company of Peekskill since its beginning in 2006. She is currently directing the One World Youth Choir.
