New Smyrna Beach, FL – A 17-year-old student from Atlantic High School has confessed to causing extensive damage at The Club at Venetian Bay golf course in New Smyrna Beach last month.
According to Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood, the incident occurred on Oct. 19, leaving the course with deep tire ruts and destroyed turf.
Early Morning Vandalism Captured on Camera
Investigators reported that surveillance footage captured a truck performing “donuts” on the golf course in the early hours of the morning. The general manager later arrived and discovered the destruction across the second green, which totaled roughly 7,000 square feet.
Sheriff Chitwood estimated the damage at approximately $160,000, highlighting the seriousness of the vandalism. The teen later admitted that the act was motivated by boredom, saying there was “nothing else to do at 2:30 in the morning.”
Criminal Charges Filed
The Atlantic High School student now faces charges of criminal mischief, a second-degree felony in Florida. Law enforcement officials are emphasizing the severe consequences of destructive behavior, particularly when it involves public or private property.
Investigation Expands to Possible Passenger
Sheriff Chitwood revealed that deputies are also investigating another individual: the passenger in the vehicle, who allegedly recorded the vandalism on his phone. Authorities are examining historical data from the passenger’s device to determine whether additional charges will be filed.
