Lawrence, Kansas — A 14-year-old was taken into custody following a dramatic vehicle theft and police chase in Lawrence, Kansas, authorities said. The incident began when the owner of a GMC Yukon reported it stolen Tuesday outside his home near 24th and Louisiana.

Police Spot Stolen Vehicle and Initiate Chase

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, officers with the Lawrence Police Department located the stolen vehicle in the 4700 block of Overland Drive with multiple occupants inside. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver reportedly fled, sparking a pursuit that spanned multiple streets in the area.

The chase route included north on Folks, east on Peterson, and south on Monterey, with officers coordinating to safely contain the situation.

Spike Strips and Vehicle Crash

During the pursuit, one officer successfully deployed spike strips, puncturing a tire on the stolen SUV. Despite the setback, the driver continued to evade police. The chase concluded when the suspect failed a left turn at Overland Drive, crashing into a utility pole.

Suspects Flee on Foot

Following the crash, the driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers quickly apprehended the individual without incident or injury. The 14-year-old suspect, who had previously been reported as a runaway, was taken to a juvenile detention center.

A second occupant, a 17-year-old, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. After being cleared, the teen was released into the care of a parent.

Community Safety and Police Response

Lawrence police emphasized the importance of swift response and coordinated efforts during pursuits involving stolen vehicles. Officers worked to mitigate risk to the public, employing spike strips and carefully following the suspect to ensure that no bystanders were harmed during the chase.

The department also reminded residents to report suspicious activity promptly, as early intervention can prevent property damage and potential injuries during incidents involving stolen vehicles.

Juvenile Consequences

Authorities noted that juveniles involved in serious offenses, such as vehicle theft and evading police, may face legal action in the juvenile justice system. Detention, supervision, and court proceedings aim to address criminal behavior while providing guidance for rehabilitation.
