San Diego, CA – A teenage boy was arrested over the weekend after allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly 27 pounds of methamphetamine into the United States, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials. The incident took place on Saturday night near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, just north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Authorities revealed that surveillance cameras captured footage of the boy at around 10:40 p.m., walking in a remote area roughly one mile east of the port. The teen appeared to be carrying two dark duffel bags in the video.
Agents Discover Suspicious Behavior
When approached by Border Patrol agents, the boy claimed he was simply hiking in the area—an explanation officials described as “unlikely.” Notably, the duffel bags seen in the surveillance video were no longer in his possession when he was stopped.
A K-9 unit was deployed and quickly located the two abandoned bags nearby. Inside, agents found multiple water bottles wrapped in electrical tape. The bottles were filled with a crystalline substance, later confirmed through testing to be methamphetamine.
Large Drug Seizure and Street Value
The bags contained a total of 26.89 pounds of methamphetamine, a seizure with an estimated street value of more than $32,000 based on recent figures. However, past and present market values suggest the true worth could be much higher as per KTLA.
For instance, a 2007 report by the DEA estimated meth prices in San Diego at $9,000 to $17,000 per pound, which would put the seizure’s value between $243,000 and $459,000. More recent estimates by the Pacific Sands Recovery Center placed the price per ounce at $150 to $300, translating to a total value of between $64,800 and $129,600 for this bust.
Investigation Turned Over to DEA
The teen suspect and the narcotics were handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for further investigation. Officials have not released the teen’s name or age, citing federal law that protects the identity of juveniles.
