Franklin County, MO — A man from Sullivan, Missouri is facing serious charges after allegedly setting fire to his own apartment, which quickly spread to multiple units in the building.
Fire Starts in East Vine Street Apartment
According to the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, the blaze began around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, in the 200 block of East Vine Street. Firefighters from the Sullivan Fire Protection District extinguished the fire but requested assistance from state investigators to determine its cause.
“Investigators believe Franks set fire to his own apartment,” the report noted. “The fire breached the gypsum board in the bedroom ceiling and spread via the attic space to five other units in the building.” (Source: Fox2Now)
The occupant of the fifth apartment was not home at the time of the fire, and fortunately, no other tenants were injured.
Suspect Arrested at Scene
The Sullivan Police Department identified and arrested Larry M. Franks at the scene. He is accused of first-degree arson, along with six counts of knowingly burning or exploding and five counts of fourth-degree assault. Franks remains jailed without bond as the investigation continues.
Fire Spread Through Attic Space
Officials explained that the fire spread rapidly through the attic space, impacting five additional apartments. Fire investigators continue to examine the building to assess structural damage and ensure safety for the remaining tenants.
