A South Carolina high school teaching assistant has been arrested after authorities say he repeatedly used “fart spray” inside the building, triggering health concerns and causing more than $55,000 in damage.
Arrest and Charges
The suspect, Alexander Lewis, 32, worked at Florence High School and is accused of using the prank spray multiple times between August 25 and September 19, according to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.
Lewis was charged with:
- Disturbing schools as a non-student
- Malicious injury to property over $10,000
He was booked into the Florence County Corrections Facility on a $9,000 bond and released on Saturday afternoon. His next court appearances are set for October 15 in magistrates court and November 19 in general sessions court.
Health Concerns and Damage
The spray, described by police as an “internet-acquired spray designed to imitate fecal odor,” forced school officials to take extensive measures.
- Students complained of foul odors and health issues, prompting inspections of gas and propane lines.
- The air conditioning system was eventually found to be damaged, with repair costs exceeding $55,000.
- Several students reportedly needed medical attention.
One parent told WKRC that her son’s asthma was triggered several times, saying:
“I had to take him to the doctor three times.”
Investigation and Aftermath
Authorities did not disclose exactly how Lewis was identified as the suspect. However, the sheriff’s office confirmed he was taken into custody last week.
School officials have not commented on whether Lewis will remain employed while his case proceeds.
