North Charleston, SC – A 75-year-old daycare employee was arrested after allegedly assaulting an infant at Sweetgrass Christian Academy, a Christian preschool in North Charleston, according to authorities.

Arrest and Charges

The suspect, Gladys Rampersant, 75, was taken into custody on Thursday by the North Charleston Police Department. She is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child for an incident that reportedly occurred in July.

According to the Special Victims Unit, Rampersant allegedly attacked a baby under one year old while working at the preschool.

Details of the Alleged Attack

Authorities said Rampersant allegedly yanked the infant up by the arms, shook the child violently, and then slammed the baby into a crib. Reports also state that she later pulled the infant out of the crib again and struck the child on the head multiple times, according to WCSC.

Bond and Court Appearance

Rampersant was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center on a $15,000 bond. She posted bond several hours later and was released. Court records show her next hearing is scheduled for October 31.

Following the arrest, multiple social media pages for Sweetgrass Christian Academy were deactivated. A Google listing now shows the daycare as “permanently closed.” The school’s website had announced its grand opening on July 26.
