It appears that Bethel CT did not get as much snow as weather forecasters predicted, at only approximately 7 inches so far. In our general area, the blizzard intensified on Long Island to the south of us, and the eastern part of Suffolk County seems to have gotten the most snow at about 18 inches.
However, light snow is still falling in Bethel, temperature is 17 degrees, wind velocity is about 20 mph, so the CT driving ban is still in place from Governor Dannel Malloy. Travel bans and blizzard warnings have been lifted in parts of NY and NJ, and blizzard warning is lifted for eastern CT. Schools are closed in Bethel, CT.
Snow totals are now predicted to be 4-8 inches in our area, with a high temperature of 21 degrees. Roads are slippery with blowing snow. Possibly more snow for Bethel on Friday and Monday, see forecast here: http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/bethel-ct/06801/daily-weather-forecast/2208046?day=1

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is ordering all first and second-shift state employees who are designated as nonessential not to report to work on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, in response to winter storm conditions across the state. State employees are encouraged to contact their supervisors for further guidance.
“After consulting with my emergency management team, we’ve decided to order all first and second-shift nonessential state employees not to report to work on Tuesday. I don’t like the term ‘nonessential’ because I think everyone does important work, but with poor road conditions I don’t want to put anyone in harm’s way,” Governor Malloy said. “We have a travel ban that is set to begin tonight at 9:00 p.m. If you are on the road after the ban begins, you are not only placing your life in danger, you are placing in danger the lives of first responders who would have to provide you with assistance if you become stranded. Please stay off the roads and let the plows do their jobs.”
“The TRAVEL BAN in Connecticut is now in effect until further notice. This applies to ALL ROADS. This prohibition extends to all vehicles except for those emergency response and recovery vehicles with the capacity to maneuver in heavy snow.
Stay off the roads. If you are on the road during the storm, you are not only placing your life in danger, but also the lives of first responders. Keep the roads clear so the plows can do their jobs.
We will have more updates on the status of the roads throughout the duration of the storm.”

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced this morning that he has adjusted the state’s travel ban. As of 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, the ban has been lifted for local roads and local travel in Fairfield and Litchfield counties. The ban remains in place for the rest of the state until further notice.
“We are working to get residents back on the road as soon as possible,” Governor Malloy said. “Because of lighter-than-expected snowfall in Fairfield and Litchfield Counties, but sustained, heavy snowfall in eastern Connecticut, we’re adjusting the ban as conditions warrant. Residents in Fairfield and Litchfield counties may travel locally if necessary, but those in the rest of the state – especially in eastern Connecticut – are encouraged to remain in their homes.”
The Governor will continue to provide updates throughout the day and residents are encouraged to continue monitoring the news for updates.

“I want to thank the residents of Connecticut for heeding the warnings and staying off the road. We were able to reduce accidents on the highways and allow DOT workers to clear the roads. With decreasing snow bands and clearing roads, I have decided to lift the statewide travel ban effective at 2 p.m. today,” Governor Malloy said. “I have coordinated this decision with Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I would advise residents who are traveling to those states to check with state authorities regarding travel restrictions. Again, thank you to the residents of the State of Connecticut for heeding the warnings and staying safe during this storm.”
The Governor is also informing third-shift nonessential state employees not to report to work this evening. All state employees are to report to work as scheduled on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. The Governor will continue to provide updates as necessary.
