New York City, NY — Police are investigating a firebombing at a West Village smoke shop after unknown incendiary objects were hurled through the storefront window, causing a large fire in the building. The incident occurred just after 3 a.m. Wednesday at the Christopher Street shopfront, which also houses a barber shop.
Suspects Seen Fleeing Scene
Authorities reported that roughly six suspects were seen breaking the window and throwing the objects. Video obtained by The Post shows two individuals lobbing two separate incendiary devices into the store:
- The first suspect threw a bottle already on fire, believed to be a Molotov cocktail based on glass debris found at the scene.
- The second suspect lit and threw what appeared to be a high-powered “M-80” firework, banned under federal law since 1966 due to its explosive composition.
The combined effect of the devices created a brief inferno that temporarily blinded surveillance cameras, while flames shot upward like a geyser near the window.
Fire Response and Investigation
FDNY crews quickly responded to reports of the blaze, and the bomb squad arrived to assist in the investigation. Interior surveillance footage showed smoke filling the store as the fire burned near the window. Police and the fire marshal are working to determine the exact cause of the blaze and whether it constitutes arson.
Items sold at smoke shops, including e-cigarette juice, are highly flammable, contributing to the intensity of the fire.
Residents Alarmed by Explosion

The incident rattled local residents, who reported hearing a “big boom” and fearing a bomb had gone off.
Jamon Exsted, a 20-year West Village resident, said:
“My initial thought was that it was a bomb. It didn’t feel like there is something to target in this neighborhood.”
Max Giuliani, another local, added: “It was an explosion I’ve never heard before. It really rattled the neighborhood.”
Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, with suspects fleeing before authorities arrived. Police have not yet released suspect descriptions.
Ongoing Investigation
The fire marshal is actively investigating the cause of the blaze. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage, examining debris at the scene, and working to determine the nature of all incendiary objects involved.
Police are asking anyone with information about the suspects or the incident to come forward.
