Sink Hole Under Railroad Tracks at Greenwood Ave. Required Bethel Police to Close Main Road in Downtown Bethel Business District

A sink hole was discovered at the railroad tracks on Greenwood Avenue in Bethel, CT, Wednesday night, that required the Bethel Police to close down a portion of this major thoroughfare indefinitely, as the emergency repair work is done. This includes the main road through the business district in Bethel. The sink hole location is in the eastbound lane of the grade crossing. Businesses are still open but the detours will definitely affect travel and shopping in the area.

Bethel Police issued the following message about detours in the area:

“PORTION OF GREENWOOD AVE. IS CLOSED! PLEASE FOLLOW ALL DETOURS. The Railroad Crossing at Greenwood Ave/Front St. will be closed until further notice. Detours are as follows: Eastbound travel – Take Blackman Ave. to South St. to Nashville Rd. to Chestnut St. Westbound travel – Take PT Barnum Square to Wooster St. to Great Pasture Rd. in Danbury to Rte.53. ALL LOCAL BUSINESSES ARE OPEN.”

Metro North will be supervising the work and also offering bus service while repairs are being done.

A the statement on the Bethel town page read:

“IMPORTANT TRAFFIC ANNOUNCEMENT: GREENWOOD AVE. TO REMAIN CLOSED THROUGH THE WEEKEND. Please be aware that Greenwood Avenue is currently closed at the downtown rail road crossing for emergency track and grade crossing repairs, and will remain closed through the weekend. A sinkhole was discovered directly beneath the tracks in the eastbound lane of the grade crossing, which will require removal and replacement of about 30 yards of track, ties and grade crossing platforms. Metro North engineers are overseeing the project. Rail road officials hope to have the crossing reopened and train service restored by Monday morning, June 14th. Metro North is providing bus service to the South Norwalk train station while repairs are under way. Bethel police have established a detour route along South Street during the repairs.”
