Sen. McLachlan Battles Again To Open UConn Foundation Records
It appears that the UConn Foundation refused to reveal a list of employees, their salaries and their duties, when Senator Michael McLachlan (R – Danbury) requested this information. Sen. McLachlan was disappointed but wasn’t surprised, reports the Hartford Courant.
The President of the UConn Foundation, Joshua R. Newton, wrote in a letter that the foundation is ““a private non-profit organization, not a government agency, and is therefore not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. This is consistent with how all non-profit organizations in Connecticut are treated.”
McLachlan said he has tried three times to pass legislation, including last Spring, to make the foundation subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). “They are losing friends doing what they are doing,” he said. “They need to recognize they are becoming tarnished because they are just insisting on not telling people what they are doing,” reports the Hartford Courant.
McLachlan will try once again next Spring to have the legislation passed making the UConn Foundation subject to the FOIA. “I’m just going to keep trying to get the attention of other legislators and see what we can do,” said McLachlan. The Senator is a ranking member on the legislature’s government administration and elections committee.
Newton said, in his letter to McLachlan, that the foundation, which is the university’s fundraising arm, “already publicly discloses as much or more information than any other non-profit organization in Connecticut,” an that the foundation is also audited annually by an independent firm and its audit report — along with other financial reporting forms — can be accessed on the organization’s website.
