Boucher: “Unless we change the way that business is done in Hartford, Connecticut’s constant budget deficits and unsustainable spending will lead us down the same road as Puerto Rico, which is defaulting on its debts … There is a better way. Republicans have proposed a Pathway to Sustainability that protects our children’s education, provides for the core services government needs to focus on, and invests in our transportation infrastructure; all without tax increases or tolls.”

Sen. Boucher: ‘First Detroit, Now Puerto Rico, is Connecticut Next?’
Message from Senator Toni Boucher:
The similarities are frightening. Can you guess if the following refers to Puerto Rico, which has run deficits so high that it must choose between funding services or making debt payments, or to Connecticut?
• Experiencing outmigration?
• One-party rule?
• High taxes, forcing everyone from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies to leave?
• Much higher spending than it can afford?
• A future of massive budget deficits?
Unfortunately the answer is that both Puerto Rico and Connecticut are experiencing each of these problems.
Unless we change the way that business is done in Hartford, Connecticut’s constant budget deficits and unsustainable spending will lead us down the same road as Puerto Rico, which is defaulting on its debts. For an alarming look at where the majority party will lead Connecticut, please click to read today’s AP article on Puerto Rico’s economic crisis.
There is a better way. Republicans have proposed a Pathway to Sustainability that protects our children’s education, provides for the core services government needs to focus on, and invests in our transportation infrastructure; all without tax increases or tolls. Connecticut deserves better, but things need to change before we travel further down the wrong path.
